Economics 101: Consumer Price Index - Newsweek

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.

Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

granted, I’m not fully paying attention, but can someone tell me if I just imagined this: On tonight’s Simpsons, which is the Halloween episode, they just had a bit where a runaway truck runs into a building with a bunch of limos and the sign “Republican Presidential Debate” on it. The truck causes the building to collapse. Then there was the joke about News Corp’s properties being owned by the devil… and the mention of our country’s healthcare system in the credits.

This was on a Fox show… they’ve made digs at both parties before, especially at the Republicans over the last few years, but this was, well, wow…
