Seriously, this video is pretty much the ideal response to the whole thing. McCain’s campaign ought to be embarrassed, and the rest of us can laugh at both his campaign and Paris’s response.

(of course it is Paris Hilton, and she gets the details of the energy policy wrong… drilling wouldn’t carry us over because it would take 5-10 years before any of that oil actually entered the market)

Two words: Net Neutrality. We need that legislation now.

But, but, but, the phone companies told me that Net Neutrality was unnecessary! Would they be that dishonest?

This is going to happen on the Internet if Net Neutrality isn’t the norm. Pressure will be brought on companies to block things.

quick update: I should mention that Verizon backed down saying this is a mistake. Good for them. The larger point still stands, though: 1) they feel they can filter content, 2) they look to have the legal rights to do so, and 3) this is why common carrier status matters in this debate. They should provide the pipe and be freed of the responsibility over the content both from a control standpoint and a liability standpoint.

I’d love more info, like why the monitor thought to block out those lines. In other words, under what interpretation of what rules “George Bush, leave this world alone” would be worthy of censor. Seriously, if I yelled that out, people might think I’m weird, but worth censoring? Really?

I've been meaning to write more about this issue, but it's complicated and the sheer volume of crap from both sides makes writing a simple explanation tough. Lots of fear from the blog side of the debate. Lots of hollow claims and more fear from the telecom industries.

Whenever a tough issue like this surfaces, though, you can count on Jon Stewart to clear it up for you. And make fun of everyone.

You can read more about Net Neutrality at Wikipedia. More on the bill passed by the House to ban online gambling (except for horseracing) at MSNBC.
