Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.

Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

The real question is why anyone, right or left, would read anything Mark Halperin does after his infamous appearance on conservative loudmouth Hugh Hewitt’s show professing a deep insecurity about his own judgement.

This is a man who has poor political and journalistic judgement which has been documented more times than I can count. Just Google him.

There’s really nothing much more I can add aside from what’s already been written and besides, I have an early, early morning tomorrow. So, I’ll leave you with my short summary, then direct you to some of the commentary on this.

Apparently, Mark Halperin, Political Director at ABC News, went on conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt’s show for a wide ranging three hour interview. In it, he basically kissed the butt of the most right wing of voices out there. It was a veritable who’s who of Bush-style conservatism. Poor misunderstood Karl Rove, naturally, among the list. It was shameful for a person with the responsibilities he has to the truth or to the craft of journalism.

Glenn Greenwald has the best rundown of the original interview.

The interview was bad enough, but then when Hewitt predictably said that the unconditional love for the conservative movement still meant Halperin was a liberal, Halperin sent public notes to Hewitt asking for his love and affection. Seriously, we’re beyond shameful and down to embarrassingly awful. Again, Greenwald has a good rundown, so go there for the background, commentary, and links to other places. Even the guy that wrote a book with Halperin wants Halperin to stop being an idiot.

Halperin has the gall to say this stuff in the face of stupid crap that rarely gets criticized in the national media, let alone in ABC News’ The Note, an online political column written by, you guessed it, Mark Halperin.
