Worth reading, on the polarization of the Israel lobby in the U.S. vs. opinions in Israel.
I’m on a mashup kick as of late, much to Heidi’s annoyance on road trips. When I get to run the radio, it’s all Girl Talk lately and she hates that stuff. Anyway, I found two more artists over the last few days. Both guys have their stuff on their web site for free.
The video above is using a mashup called Sweet Home Country Grammar which is a mashup of Sweet Home Alabama and Nelly’s Country Grammar. So far, it’s just about my favorite discovery of the past few months. The mashup is by DJ Mei-Lwun. You can download this track along with several others at his web site (click his name in the previous sentence). I also really love his mashup of Kanye West’s Jesus Walks and AC/DC’s Back in Black. The mashup is called Jesus Walked Back and He’s Black. It works really well.
The other artist I found has also been doing the mashup thing for a while. His name is Party Ben and he also has an extensive collection of his tracks on his web site. My favorites right now are Galvanize the Empire, a mashup of the Chemical Brothers’ Galvanize and the Empire March from one of the Star Wars movies, and Rehab (Can’t Help Myself), which mashes up Amy Winehouse’s Rehab and the Four Tops’ Can’t Help Myself. So good. Check out his web site, you can preview and/or download a whole ton of stuff there.
We’ll never know, obviously, but I wonder every time I read stories like this about what the world would look like today if George W. Bush got the “Axis of Evil” right, didn’t invade Iraq, and focused on more pragmatic foreign policy rather than this delusion about establishing a secular democracy in Iraq at the point of a gun while avenging Daddy.
Nuclear proliferation and actual terrorism supporting states like Syria and Afghanistan should’ve been our focus, but instead we have a war that has cost over $500 billion in direct costs.
I’m with Kevin Drum here. AIPAC could use the competition.
This is an interesting theory about the state of American technology and some of the gamesmanship going on behind the scenes… curious if any of it is actually on the money. Not sure how we’ll know, exactly.
See if you can spot the problem with these statements by the President:
“Our success in Iraq must not be measured by the enemy’s ability to get a car bombing in the evening news,” he said. “No matter how good the security, terrorists will always be able to explode a bomb on a crowded street.”
He suggested Israel, the frequent target of terrorist attacks and a country in a decades-long, intractable and often violent dispute with Palestinians, as a standard to strive for.
“In places like Israel, terrorists have taken innocent human life for years in suicide attacks,” Bush said. “The difference is that Israel is a functioning democracy and it’s not prevented from carrying out its responsibilities. And that’s a good indicator of success that we’re looking for in Iraq.”
It was likely to be controversial — and possibly even explosive — for Bush to set out Israel as a model for a Muslim Middle Eastern nation.
Uh, ya think? WTF is wrong with this guy? I know the public caricature of Bush is that he’s a dumb frat boy, but these statements reflect an inexplicable ignorance of the diplomatic and cultural sensitivities of the region. How can you be President, in a time where Islamist terrorists are the primary national security threat, and not get that this is a bad thing to say???
Just in case there’s any doubt about what he said, here’s the direct quote from the White House web site:
Our success in Iraq must not be measured by the enemy’s ability to get a car bombing into the evening news. No matter how good the security, terrorists will always be able to explode a bomb on a crowded street. In places like Israel, terrorists have taken innocent human life for years in similar attacks. The difference is that Israel is a functioning democracy that is not prevented from carrying out its responsibilities. And that’s a good indicator of success that we’re looking for in Iraq: the rise of a government that can protect its people, deliver basic services for all its citizens, and function as a democracy even amid violence.
Does abject stupidity and incompetence count as high crimes and misdemeanors? Our country cannot handle 18 more months of this presidency.

Short excerpt:
About six weeks ago, word first surfaced of a set of earlier, unofficial negotiations between Israel and Syria, which had resulted in a draft agreement between the two countries. The agreement provides for an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights, most of which would then be turned into a park accessible (without visas) to both Syrians and Israelis. (Personally, I think this is a very imaginative solution.) It also provides for demilitarization of the border, Israeli control of water rights from the Sea of Galilee and the upper Jordan, and verification.
Ha’Aretz reports that the U.S. strongly opposed talks between Israel and Syria. It doesn’t make any sense beyond bullheadedness. The comments over at ObWi are also interesting… read them if you’re interested in these things.
