One of those mocking, derisive but ultimately silly attacks made by both Giuliani and Palin yesterday had to do with mocking Obama’s time as a community organizers. I’ve read many different posts today defending the work community organizers do but Obama, as you might expect, puts the right perspective on the issue. Steve Benen has more background.

(he slightly misspeaks at the start — it was 20 years ago, not 3).

What Monica Goodling did to the DOJ, along with her other staffers, is pretty much the opposite of what America is about. Un-American is often thrown around by partisans to demagogue, but in this case the word seems to be the only appropriate choice. We are supposed to get beyond politics when doing the actual work of governing. These agencies, especially, need to be beyond politics.

Another reason, btw, why George W. Bush is the worst President in American history.

It’s silly, but it made me laugh a bit. Happy Monday everyone.

Whoever becomes President next will have to deal with all of this. How do you get the experienced folks to come back to agencies like the CDC that have been driven away over the last 7+ years? It should be more reassuring that the Rove folks who helped put these sycophants into the agencies are now running McCain’s campaign…

This is going to be the long-terms damage that this administration has inflicted on the nation. The cronyism reached to the lowest ranks of the bureaucracy, something that seems very different than the sorts of cronyism one expects at the top of the tree. (via Atrios)

61% of historians surveyed agree with my contention the the Bush presidency has been the worst in U.S. history.

Update: Worth pointing out that this isn’t a statistically meaningful survey (self-selecting respondents, etc.) so it’s more a conversation starter than an actual conclusion.

Go Nancy! Love the answer to, “Is the President lying?”

The average effective income tax rate for the top 400 earners in the U.S. (as reported on their taxes) was about 18%. It was about 30% during the Clinton years. According to Wikipedia, a person earning about $50,000, no itemized deductions, has an effective tax rate of 18%. This is supposed to be a progressive taxation system (and this doesn’t even consider the payroll tax effect, which raises effective tax rates for lower incomes). I’d have to guess that a lot of this is dividend tax related, since most of us have little in terms of dividend income.

Tell me again which party is the “law and order” party? Because it sure isn’t the Republican party, and certainly not this administration.

The moral high ground has been abandoned by the Bush administration and everyone has noticed. It’s pretty sad what 8 years with him as President has done to our country.

His delivery is over the top for my taste, but the points he brings up about the law itself, about the holes in the President’s logic, and about the telecom immunity portions are dead on. The President is lying about the role of this bill and the immediacy of action. In fact, this bill could die tomorrow and the surveillance begun under the PAA would be in force until the next President comes into office. The President and the Republicans are putting on a show, prioritizing telecoms and their own lawbreaking over you, me, and the rule of law in our land.

It would be nice if those law-and-order conservatives who scream about immigration laws would step up and treat big companies with big donors the same way. The law here is clear. All I ask is that the President and the Republicans follow it and speak truthfully about it.

C&L has the video. Pretty much covers how I feel about this one.

One of the things I feel like I have to compensate for when writing about the Democratic primary is an instinctual reaction to the Hillary Clinton campaign. It is best summarized by this comment over at Balloon Juice:

I just can’t fathom having a Bush or Clinton in office for possibly 28 years straight. Is that supposed to happen in a democracy?

I don’t have a problem with her being a woman, or the fact that Republicans will attack her mercilessly, possibly blowing more than the $40-60 million they spent investigating Bill Clinton over the course of an 8 year run. I can’t control Fox News as much as I’d like to. I do have an issue with the de facto aristocracy we’re creating (don’t forget about Jeb Bush in 4-8 years), though. All other policy considerations aside, it would be nice to get some new blood into the White House.

It’s time to impeach. Seriously. Not kidding, not hedging, not using hyperbole as a rhetorical tactic. This. Is. F’ing. Stupid. Mr. President, sign it or don’t, don’t grandstand with passed legislation.

And, let’s not kid ourselves. The only reason Congress hasn’t yet is because there are many Republicans who put party above country. They should be ashamed of themselves not for this individual action, but for the pattern that has come before this. More on this later.

After you’re done reading that bit of administration ridiculousness, look at some of the abuse going on inside the Smithsonian. Overt corruption is becoming acceptable, and that’s a sign of decay for great nations throughout history.

When you sit around imagining the good that America could do in Afghanistan (and I had high hopes in 2002 that we could’ve brought Afghanistan forward a few decades), these are the kind of programs you imagine. Sadly, the Bush administration is cutting back on these programs and spending a ton of resources next door in Iraq. We could get a nice 2-for-1 return on the failed state lottery…
