Oh Mama. I’ve been waiting for this for MONTHS. MONTHS! Can’t wait to dive in on this.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

I’ll bite: compare-and-contrast with S3?

This isn’t standalone. It can be mounted as a drive on EC2 instances. Think SAN vs. an FTP server.
S3 only supports PUT and GET style operations, no block level access for individual files. There are commercial products that allow EC2 instances to map virtual filesystems onto blocks stored or replicated to S3, but this one is built into Amazon’s infrastructure and will, hopefully, be more drive like (S3 is slow, hopefully this will be faster). Also, it comes integrated into the tools we use as well as Amazon’s default toolset.
I’m still reading about it, so I don’t have a more detailed comparison.
