CNN has a story up right now that says Obama might be modifying his stance on offshore drilling. Read this, the only direct quote in the piece, and tell me if that’s what you read:

“My interest is in making sure we’ve got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama told The Palm Beach Post early into a two-day swing through Florida.

“If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don’t want to be so rigid that we can’t get something done,” Obama said.

So, he’s willing to give a little in order to get a good bill passed. Isn’t this what working across the aisle really looks like? I don’t get the idea that he thinks it’s a good idea, just that he’d consider it if he got a bill that moved us away from oil in the longer term.

Yet, the CNN comment thread is full of people whining about “flip-flopping.” This doesn’t seem to fit. If they want to see what real flip-flopping looks like, they should check out this fine list of flip flops over at the carpetbagger.
