I finally caved and bought a set. I went to the driving range for the first time yesterday and it was, uh, amusing.

Found this via Brea Grant’s blog. It’s a good song, and the rest of the album is pretty good. You can get the album, Re-arrange Us, on Amazon.com’s MP3 store. No DRM, just plain, high quality MP3 files.
(PS. Don’t forget to watch Brea Grant on Heroes in a few weeks, and check out other books and music she likes over at Coolspotters. And, no, I’ve got no connection to her, business or otherwise. Just a fan since I saw her on Friday Night Lights.)

No taunting permitted! I’m in my second full season of being a golfer. I officially picked up the hobby the month of my wedding, August 2006, when I had finished my internship and was playing a bunch with my father-in-law. Everything I did before that was just duffing around.
Sujal, a couple of suggestions:
1. Be very kind to yourself. People take years to be maddeningly inconsistent after years of being bad. If you enjoy one shot per outing, you can keep coming back.
2. Practice is good and it’s fun. You get immediate feedback from minor experiments like opening the clubface a few degrees.
3. Practice makes permanent. Take lessons. They’re about the same price as a round of golf, and you will enjoy the results longer.
4. It’s a hard game, and you don’t need to make it harder for yourself by playing tough lies or long holes when you’re not gambling on your performance. The official maximum score per hole is 10.
Case in point: over July 4th weekend, I shot 120 thrice while taking no advantages and playing by all the rules. I was thrilled, and that’s just a 33% improvement over hitting 5 balls into the water and quitting every hole.
5. The etiquette rules are a pain in the ass but make everything smoother. It may feel like Josh/I/Starter is a little bossy about playing in turn and putting in turn, but it speeds up the game a lot. And adhering to etiquette means that you’re playing against the course unimpeded by the people you happen to be playing next to.
6. Most importantly, never let your performance interfere with the real reason we’re on the golf course: to spend a few hours with people we really like hanging out with.

Could Sujal be a NERFL Open entrant this year?
I like Dan’s rules, here’s a couple of others:
1) Golf is a walk in the park. Enjoy the scenery, the lay of the land, have fun with the people you are playing with, and realize that everyone else started right where you are; with there first set of clubs.
2) Jish isn’t allowed to taunt. And if he does, call me and I will tell you the story of how Jishman hit the water trap directly behind him in Myrtle Beach… ahhh what the heck, ask me at the NERFL draft and I’ll tell you anyway, it’s a funny story.
3) Have a great time… Congrats on the purchase!

Just to defend the good reputation of Jishman, I didn’t think he’d taunt me (much) about my skills on the course, just the fact that, after swearing I would never buy a set and learn how to golf, I finally did.

Oh no… I’ve been golfing with Jishman since 2000 and he taunts me every time we hit the course. Trust me, it’s part of the fun of “have fun with the people you are playing with…” He does it all in good fun but Jish has MAD SKILLZ, so taunting is part of his game.
Congrats again on the purchase!!!… now let’s get you on the course…
PS — As long as you don’t pull a kirsch and forget to bring your golf clubs to the golf course, none of us will taunt you too much (wink, wink)

I’d never taunt a fellow hacker. Trust me, once I get into the single digits, then I have a place. Otherwise, I’m just another duffer.
Seriously though, everything people wrote above is true:
1.) Enjoy it, because no matter how upset you get, its always better than being in the office.
2.) You can’t look as bad as Doug does on the range.
3.) You can’t BE as bad as Kirsch is on the course.
4.) You can’t be as bad as you think you are.
Remember, its only called golf because sh#$ was already taken. Enjoy it!

Hey Jish,
You know the difference between you and me? I make this look good.

I like that. Golf club finished high? check. Watching his ball? check. Having no idea where it went? Double check.

Having kicked Jishman’s arse yet again? PRICELESS!!!
