There’s a thesis paper in episodes like this, basically determining the size of “grassroots” protests from the perspective of a corporation or agency receiving complaints. The Internet makes mobilizing like-minded supporters easy, and it generally over-magnifies the voice of small interest groups. I can’t imagine too many people aside from right wing bloggers looking at the Rachel Ray ad in question and reaching the same conclusion as these right wing bloggers — they see terrorism everywhere in everything. It’s sort of silly. Yet, Dunkin Donuts pulled the ad. There was no reason to do that.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.
