ESPN (not an uninterested observer in this mess, btw) covers the NFL Network and why the nation can’t see the Packs/Cowboys game this week. One thought: allowing a la carte purchases with a cheap monthly fee, say $5/month + the individual subscriber fees for each channel you want would solve this.
While the NFL is the most popular sport, and most guys think that EVERYONE should want sports channels, the fact of the matter is that sports aren’t as universally popular as one would think. The way these cable deals work is that the cable company pays a subscriber fee for everyone that has access to a particular channel, regardless of whether they want it or actually view it that month. So, being on the basic tier (like ESPN is) brings in GOBS of cash. ESPN, for example, makes as much or more money in subscriber fees than in advertising. The market for the NFL Network is actually pretty small in an a la carte world, which is why no one, cable providers or cable broadcasters, wants to see it happen. If you’re pissed about this, and you want to take the NFLs advice about lobbying Congress, ask for cable choice, where you can choose the channels you want for a fee + cost. You’ll end up cutting down on the extra channels and lower your bill at the same time.

This is basically an interview with John Gaeta about the approach taken in the upcoming remake of Speed Racer. The movie looks great, and I’m such a fan of the Wachowski brothers that this is on my must see list. The Matrix and V for Vendetta are among my favorite movies in large part because of the visual and stylistic weight of their films.

At last you write about something important. Yes, the NFL channels are total BS. I might have thought about buying the NFL channels, but then they wanted to screw with my grandfathered comcast packages (which of course 20 times better than what they offer today).
This whole thing stinks. The sponsors can’t be all that happy. What would it take to make the NFL channels fail so the games return to regular televsion?
This idea of picking the channels you want can get messy. I’m a channel surfer with no loyalty to scheduled programming, if I see something I watch it, it could be on the food channel, USA, or ION. But if you make me choose what channels I can watch, then I get hosed.
I’m wondering if satelite tv or dish tv might be the better option. Which I knew more people who have it to make the comparison.

I meant to write, if I see something I like, I watch it, if even for only a few minutes. I get what I want out of 5 or 10 mins of viewing and then I move on to the next thing.

I don’t know if a la carte is necessarily that bad. I’m also a channel surfer, but I surf primarily to the same 20 channels or so. You can see my run down of how I would like an a la carte service on an older post.
Also, I just switched to DirecTV, and it’s not “better” in any real way. I mean, you do get the NFL network and more channels like that are included, but with the entry HD package with Comcast I received more channels like Sundance, all of the Encore movie channels, and, of course, the On Demand library.
So, there are tradeoffs. So far, though, having more HD content has been worth the switch to DirecTV for me.

I think there is some scheme between satillite tv and the NFL Network. It would seem that if the NFL Network wanted to make the most money possible it would be broadcasted on both cable tv, like Time Warner Cable and satellite.
