ESPN (not an uninterested observer in this mess, btw) covers the NFL Network and why the nation can’t see the Packs/Cowboys game this week. One thought: allowing a la carte purchases with a cheap monthly fee, say $5/month + the individual subscriber fees for each channel you want would solve this.

While the NFL is the most popular sport, and most guys think that EVERYONE should want sports channels, the fact of the matter is that sports aren’t as universally popular as one would think. The way these cable deals work is that the cable company pays a subscriber fee for everyone that has access to a particular channel, regardless of whether they want it or actually view it that month. So, being on the basic tier (like ESPN is) brings in GOBS of cash. ESPN, for example, makes as much or more money in subscriber fees than in advertising. The market for the NFL Network is actually pretty small in an a la carte world, which is why no one, cable providers or cable broadcasters, wants to see it happen. If you’re pissed about this, and you want to take the NFLs advice about lobbying Congress, ask for cable choice, where you can choose the channels you want for a fee + cost. You’ll end up cutting down on the extra channels and lower your bill at the same time.
