As most of you know, the wildfires in California have destroyed as many as 1,300 homes, and threaten many more. As Sujal may recall, our classmate Shreya lives in San Diego, as do family members of some of my friends. So I’m throwing this up here to suggest that people consider donating to the Red Cross. CNN has additional ideas. That’s all.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

“One reason why we have the fires in California is global warming,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Tuesday, stressing the need to pass the Democrats’ comprehensive energy package.
Pretty rediculous statement, Sujal. Nothing like taking advantage of a horrendous situation, wouldn’t you agree?
In the spirit of bipartisan outrage, show me some love.

He corrected himself in a followup question. It took literally 30 seconds on Google News to figure that out.
What’s ridiculous is that this is your choice for engaging in conversation. This was a throwaway set of statements in a rambling answer. But then again, faux outrage is easier than caring about actual policy and policy outcomes…
Why don’t you do something useful instead and donate some cash to the Red Cross using one of the links above?
At least you didn’t call me names this time. I guess that’s something.

Yes, Sujal - King of prose.
I’m more concerned about the people in California, not the political weasels on either side. He didn’t correct himself, he realized that even he couldn’t get away with such a half-baked statement. That’s what happens when you put your agenda (right or left) over people at the time of disaster. mHe’s a creep.
By the way, I did actually donate to a religious charity that will help the folks in CA. So did you donate? Or did you just use that line to try to appeal to your fanbase?
I didn’t call you names. But Harry Reid deserves worse. Wish you could JUST ONCE have the courage to call it down the middle. Do you have it in you?

you act as if “calling it down the middle” is virtuous in and of itself somehow… It’s not.
I’m not sure you understand that this doesn’t outrage me. This wasn’t a major policy speech, or some prepared comment. It’s simply not that remarkable.
Look, I’m not the one that looks at the world through ideological glasses. You’re the one that sees issues as “liberal” or “conservative” and you’re the one that won’t vote for candidates based on their religion. You’re the one who believes in a vast liberal conspiracy.
In other words, you’re the one with ideology triumphing policy judgement. You’re projecting that onto me (and the others at the West Hartford Blog). Please stop.
