Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

Thanks for stopping by. I read your article, and your objection is to the classification of things as liberal or not. That’s fine.
I do think some of your examples speak to your own biases. For example, the debate over SCHIP really highlights what it means to be centrist. That program is widely supported beyond just progressives and liberals. It is centrist by any measure.
Criticism of the President doesn’t make a column “liberal” or progressive, it just makes it a criticism of the president.
