Monday after class, I tried to get a Wii at the Nintendo World Store at Rockefeller Center. Sold out. Tuesday, Toys R Us.
Got a ticket, got in line outside. Yes it’s the third day. Still a line.
Best quote so far, by two women in Burberry, with five kids in tow: “what are these people doing?”
-”they must be waiting to buy something.”
-”what do you think they are waiting for.
-”I don’t know.”
Maybe the marketing isn’t working ![]()

Whole process took about an hour. They let in 10-20 people from the line at a time, to go downstairs and join another line.
I was at the front of the outdoors line for 10 minutes, and chatted with the security guard. Very good guy. Runs a security firm, retired Bronx detective. Has two sets of twins, 6 and 8. His wife’s grandmother was a twin…and he’s completely overwhelmed!

Found it:
I only got Madden, and the bundled Wii Sports… too much homework to play Zelda! And they were out of nunchucks, so I could only buy a second Wiimote…no 2-player Madden.
Josh came up to help test it out yesterday. Baseball was a ton of fun. Neither of us cared that the graphics were an afterthought. We played some golf, and that was a little frustrating because the sensor bar wasn’t picking up our whole swing, so we had to make some slightly irregular movements on short putts.
Only complaint is the use of the remote as a mouse. I felt like the cursor was out of control, or about to spin out of control. My hand was gripping the Wiimote too hard during the language selection screen…which took me way too long to click English.
Gameplay was a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to playing more.

My favorite part about the baseball game was that while the “floating heads acting as players” had no feet, legs or arms (yet still had hands — one of which contained a glove while in the field), they still kicked up grass when they “ran”. Big time humor.
I think had we about 3-5 more feet from the sensor, it would have been even more fun. Just a guess though.

On Wii Sports, the graphics are almost an afterthought. And you don’t care. The games are just fun.

Looks like maybe Kareem has a point.
I think the jury is still out because the gameplay isn’t bad at all on the other consoles. While the fancy motion sensing wiimote is nice, it feels like a gimick.

That’s right. Kareem and I are reading the same coverage: people play with the Wii and have a smile on their face.
Sure, gameplay is great on the other consoles. They are beautiful improvements on the previous Xbox and PS2…but I don’t own either one of those consoles anymore. I didn’t play them enough, and they weren’t hooked up once I got to NYC.
I’m not saying that I’ll play the Wii enough, but it’s definitely fun. And I’m not planning to sign up for any 80 hour adventures (Zelda included) or complicated shooters, so I’m not even the target market for Xbox360/PS3 anymore. When I want to play, I want a game I can get good at very quickly and enjoy quickly. Dying is not fun, unless you want to play the game for a lot of hours…and if I want that, I’ll play Civ4.
