Steve Clemons has a good article up about how Bush’s defense of the NSA program misses the point entirely.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

Very good piece, and another good piece on the NSA by Matthew Gross gives some history of spying on Americans in the U.S. and includes this statement to a point that a lot of us have been assuming, “that N.S.A. technicians, besides actually eavesdropping on specific conversations, have combed through large volumes of phone and Internet traffic in search of patterns that might point to terrorism suspects. Some officials describe the program as a large data-mining operation….” From time to time I have clicked on porn emails that came as spam to my email just to see what it is being sent to me. The other day, a link took me directly to the CIA website. There is a lot more going on than has met the media scrutiny on this.
