Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

I have to say, gas is down .30+ in our area since the big spike right after the storm. Of course, I never thought I’d be happy to see 2.79 a gallon.

Around here it’s only gone down slightly. In Richmond, it was $2.99 for regular, and $3.29 for supreme… Which of course meant $51 to fill my gas tank. And that’s cheap compared to DC. I’m hoping that BMW or Audi will come out with a hybrid by the time I’m ready to buy again…
