Alright, normally, I don’t tell people about my various drinking experiences (not that there are so many to tell about), but this weekend, I think I might have personally polished off a bottle of Macallen 12. This was truly one of the best scotches I’ve ever had.
Normally, I’m a Glenfiddich kind of guy. I like the slight bite, with the smokey feel to it. I’ve also had the Lagavulin 16 year, too. Another impressive bottle. This Macallen, however, was just incredible. The smoke coupled with the smooth taste really reminded me what a truly great bottle of scotch could taste like.
Just thought you all would like to know.

What have I been telling you for years?

I’m a little slow to the game. What can I say?

I’ve been looking for cheaper alternatives to the Macallan. I’ve found a few good ones, but nothing can compete, for my taste, than Macallan. The 18 is just awesome, but way too expensive. For awhile the 15 was just a touch pricier than the 12. That was the highest value scotch I think I have purchased: many of the features of the 18 with the price of the 12.

The 18 was good. Never tried the 15. Just never try Aburlour 10, Dewers (no matter what kind) or Johnny Walker Red or Black. Other than that, you’re good.

During one of my visits to NOLA, Tam and I sat in the bar of the Intercontinental and had a few of the scotches. The bar tender was bored and quite knowledgible about scotch. He threw us a taste of “Lac Du.” I don’t know much about it, except that it was pretty good (I can’t even really recall the dominant flavors). The most striking feature is that the stuff was jet black. Quite remarkable.
Tamar and I want to hit Scotland and Italy once I finish residency. I just want to sample a few scotches.
