Wow, never thought I’d see the day when Filene’s would close down their Downtown Crossing location. I also was surprised that Filene’s Basement is owned by a different company (and will stay open).

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

I think that it is a shame that the mother of all Filene’s is closed. It is a shame!!!
Filene’s Basement had nothing to with us, so please don;t confuse the beautiful high end Filene’s with that junk store.
I was an employee and cried everyday for weeks before we said our final goodbyes to our home-away-from Filene’s of Boston!
Even our customers were crying. It is the end of an era. Macy’s has won. Macy’s is beautiful high end store but I miss Filene’s!
