Joe Torre wonders what will happen to the rivalry now that the Sox have won it all. Quite frankly, the rivalry wasn’t fueled by the curse talk. It’s fueled (and supported by fans around the country) because the Yankees and their fans are smug and arrogant. If you’ve ever seen the Yankee coverage on the YES Network, you’d understand… every other commercial break reminds you that the Yankees have won 26 World Series titles and contains the tagline that they are the best sports franchise in the world. As if the English soccer fans care about the Yankees… The Yankees are also easy to root against. Think about the rivalry like any good story. There’s the villian in George Steinbrenner and an easy plot to recognize in the David and Goliath story.

So the Red Sox won a World Series. None of the other stuff has changed though. As long as they keep spending like they do and act as if they’re better than the rest of the teams in the league, fans around the country, and in Boston in particular, will be happy to hate the Yankees.
