I’m still recovering from the Eagles loss tonight, but suffice to say, losing this way hurt. It was almost like watching Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when Grady left Pedro in. Just watching and thinking out loud, “What the hell?” It’s called No Huddle, Mr. McNabb/Reid.
So, congrats to the Patriots, one of the least classy 3-time Super Bowl winners, and the least classy dynasty. I can’t imagine a team in any sport that has more of a victim complex than the New England Patriots. They were favored by 7 points, but whined and moaned about all the T.O. coverage. News flash to the Patriots: the guy freaking put up 120 yards on a broken leg that wasn’t 100% healed. If you can’t understand why people want to know about that, shut up. The whole game, they’re doing their best imitations of the Eagles celebrations as if, inexplicably, they had something to prove… fascinating.
Update: It’s not a bug, it’s a feature:
From Bill Simmons’ pre-Super Bowl column:
And then there’s this: Near the end of the Pats-Steelers game two weeks ago, NFL Films cameras caught Willie McGinest proudly walking down the sidelines, barking to his teammates, “We the champs . . . they FORGOT that!”
Did the Steelers really forget that the Patriots were the defending champs? Of course not. But that’s been one of the goofy wrinkles of the Belichick-Brady Era — the Patriots always manage to make themselves feel disrespected, then they take it out on whomever they’re playing. Jordan and the Bulls used to do the same thing. So did Jeter and the Yankees. And after today’s game, I think people will start putting Brady and the Patriots in that same class.
No, Simmons. The Yankees don’t do this. Neither did the Bulls. They KNEW they were going to win. They didn’t need to play stupid mind games to get themselves up for games. They sure as hell didn’t go out there and have to mock the other team to prove how good they were, either.
The T.O. coverage was about whether the Eagles would even stand a chance against the Pats. If anything, all the coverage and questions was a sign of how much people expected your classless team to win. Idiots.
