I got iChatStatus a few days ago. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it is a hack that displays, for anyone who has you on their iChat buddy list, what you playing on iTunes. Since getting it (and yes, I know it has been out there for a while), I’ve started to be more conscious of what others are playing.

Who knew that Sujal listened to Korn and DMX. I’m not really sure what I was expecting, but not that. And Josh! Yeah, I expect Chicago and all measures of stuff like that. I did a radio show with the guy for years, so I figure I have a pretty good idea of what he likes. Then BOOM, out of no where, something by Eminem, Dr Dre and Nate Dog. Where did Josh go? The Josh I know would flip it in seconds, yet, there it is playing and the entity behind the IMs seems like Josh.

Then I realized I’m starting to be more aware of what I’m listening to and what I’m telling the world I’m listening to. I will admit that own “I Think Were Alone Now” sung by Tiffany, but you’ll never see it on my iChatStatus. I’ve got some really funny covers by Hayseed Dixie, but few are likely to see me listening to them. I’ve tried to put on a “cool” face, playing stuff that is interesting or maybe even “sophisticated.” (Sadly, I can’t spell sophisticated without looking it up). You won’t see much classical on my iChatStatus, as that might come off as pompous (and if you do it would be more obscure stuff, since that would be cooler than Beethoven’s 5th). Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about Ashlee Simpson accidentally coming up on my iChatStatus, as that would be a “d’oh” worthy offense.

I’m beginning to think that maybe I should uninstall it. I never expected to be so self conscious of what I like. I guess I’m a little bit suprised.

BTW, if you see me listening to Cirque du Soleil or Bond, I’m not trying to be cool. That stuff is awesome.
