Hey people out there, does anyone (cough cough Bram cough cough) have any good white wine recommendations for house warming holiday gifts? I was thinking a reisling and another white (a pino?), something around 30 bucks (give or take a few?)….

Finally, after way too freaking long, Buraka Som Sistema has released their latest album, Black Diamond. The song above, Sound of Kuduro is by far the best on the album, but there are some other nice gems on here. MIA is featured on several tracks, and the rhythm is just addicting. I cannot sit still when this is on.
Click on the image to download the album (as DRM free MP3s) from Amazon.

Okay — I am o wine connisseur, but I really like a good reisling. And believe it or not — reislings from the Niagara refion or niagara peninsula are really good (should be made in Cananda). Inniskillen is a good one — but I don’t know if you could find it in a store. I got it at the winery. Of course, the german reislings are the original. That’s probably little to no help, but it’s my two cents.

Okay… Depends on what you are looking for (the benefit of parents with a wine cellar):
California: Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc, Hartford Winery Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, Kendall-Jackson Camelot Bench Chardonnay, Beringer Sbragia Reserve Chardonnay
German: JJ Prum Riesling Kabinett
Australian: Rosemount Chardonnay
Italian: Tiefenbrunner Pinot Bianco
Red Wines: Mount Veeder (a little pricey but very, very good), Columbia Crest Merlot, Acacia Pinot Noir
You can also look at Sabastiani wines
Some of the above, depending on where you look may list for a little above $30 per bottle… not many of them, but they are good…

I’m not a huge white wine drinker. I find most of them have an very unpleasant taste to them.
I’m a huge fan of German wines, although I understand that a reisling may not be what you are looking for. There are other german varietals, such as Scheurebe, however those aren’t that different from Reisling.
The other reason I like German wines is that the labeling laws are very strict and you can get a pretty good idea of what you are getting before you open the bottle. I like Scheurbe’s from Pfaltz in a spatelese sweetness. However kabinetts are also good. If you really like your wines dry look for one that has been fermented dry (troken). I also like wines from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Good producers are Dr. Loosen, JJ Prum, Muller-Catoir. I’ve found Kurt Darting’s wines to be a pretty good deal.
Another idea is to get a dessert wine (something I know much more about). Hoppler, from Austria, makes excellent dessert wines that are half (or less) the cost of their German cousins. I have been unimpressed by the Canadian ice wines that are in the afforadable price range, although my sampling has been limited.
As for reds, I’m a bit more knowledgeable. Pinot Noirs are a fine choice as it traditionally goes with both Turkey and red meats (although I’ll drink any color of wine with anything or nothing). I happen to like blends, so I tend towards french wines. That being said, I’m loving J. Lohr’s Paso Robles, as it is blended very much like many of the St. Emilion wines yet is from an American producer. If you can find the Paso Robles Pomme Cuvee, you will sitting pretty. Some of the Austrialian are starting to blend too. As cheap as it is, Rosemount is making some pretty go blends. Their Granache-Shiraz blend is very versatile and pretty cheap.
If you want to go out on a limb and are willing to buy French wine, Languedoc offers great wines for around 10-15$ a bottle. I’ve purchased several from them in the past blind and haven’t been disappointed. I’d ask the local wino before buying one as a gift, however.

It’s cheap, but I love Robert Mondavi johannesburg reisling. The gold/copper labelled bottle is the one i drink. It’s only about $11-$12, but it always a good bet.

Listening to BadMD is a dangerous idea. I don’t recommend it.
