Wow, what a weird coincidence. Heidi and I were just talking about these comic books I read as a child that were about the great Indian mythology. Think Bible stories as comics or perhaps things like the Odyssey or Illiad. These are epic poems and stories that form the backbone of some of India’s biggest religions. Well, I’m going through my news aggregator and see the very same comics mentioned on Boing Boing. I couldn’t remember the publisher for the life of me.

Thanks to Boing Boing, I remember that they were called Amar Chitra Katha. I remember reading these over and over again when I was a kid visiting India. They were in English and were one of the few things I could read over there. Pretty much those and Archie comics were the only things I read while visiting India as a child. Someone even has The Ramayana graphic novel online (all the pages, it seems). The cover is different but the art and style inside looks much the same as they did when I was a kid.

The online store at the Amar Chitra Katha site even has all the Birbal stories. They even have Jain illustrated stories (which, oddly enough, I’ve never seen or read before). I guess I’ll be doing some shopping pretty soon.
