Rudolph Giuliani, October 28, 2004: “No matter how you try to blame it on the president, the actual responsibility for it really would be for the troops that were there. Did they search carefully enough? Didn’t they search carefully enough?”
Dick Cheney, October 28, 2004: “He’s never let himself be burdened by the facts… Frankly, I think it’s a cheap shot. I personally believe it says something about the character of a man who would make it, who would use his position now as a candidate for short-term political reasons to take that kind of shot at the military, at our military leadership and the folks who are in the field.” (Login: booyeah2@boo.com Password: hopkins1)
Get the feeling they got their signals crossed?

i saw all the hubbub about this earlier but didn’t post it because it feels like a “gotcha” quote taken out of context… haven’t had a chance to read the Republican-leaning blogs to get their interpretation, but I think he might have been explaining what Kerry’s position amounted to. I couldn’t find transcripts on the TOday Show site, so I’m not sure what exactly he said…
Bottom line? It doesn’t sound like Giuliani, at least not the one I’ve been listening to. He’s just not that politically stupid.

On Meet the Press today, Giuliani said that he was characterizing Kerry’s position.

I’ve seen the clip since, thought, and he didn’t do a very good job of delivering that point… it’s nor surprising that it got picked up. It’s in the same category, I guess, as “I voted for the $87 Billion before I voted against it” in the great scheme of things…

and it goes without saying, I thought, that Giuliani’s point is wrong either way you interpret it. The criticism isn’t of how hard the troops searched, but that they weren’t ordered to do so in the first place. Thought I’d just throw that in.
