Jon Stewart made an appearance on the O’Reilly Factor a week ago as part of his book promotion tour. During the appearance, O’Reilly made a half-joking comment that Stewart has a lot of influence among the “stoned slackers” that watch the Daily Show. Comedy Central apparently took some offense to this reference, claiming concern that it might erode their advertiser base. They’ve since been publicizing studies that show that we’re all not stoned slackers. Then (yes, there’s MORE!), the results of National Annenberg Election Survey shows that the Daily Show viewers did the best on the six question quiz. The quiz was of late night TV viewers, so no word on whether they did better than viewers of The O’Reilly Factor. Oh, and Wonkette is having fun with this.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

The Boston Herald posted an article about a web site petition asking Jon Stewart to endorse a candidate for president. It reiterates what you stated above about young men and women who watch all comedy shows having a better grasp of issues then those who don’t… long live the comics!

A grassroots Internet campaign has been launched to urge Jon Stewart, host of Comedy Central’s popular “The Daily Show,” to endorse a presidential candidate.
“For better or worse, you are a primary source of news for people of our generation,” declared the petition, posted at http://www.dearjonstewart.com.
