Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

what would actually ahppen if it was the 7th inning and the yankees were beating the crap out of the sox and a lightning storm erupted? would they pick up where they left off another day?

no….after 1/2 of a game has been played or 4 and 1/2 innings….the game is considered official, unless the home team is losing… then they have to play 5 innings by rule.
So, in your scenario… The Yankees would win the game in 7 innings
