The Yankees wanted Tampa Bay to forfeit a game because they were unable to arrive in time for the first game of a day/night doubleheader. The reason they were late? The Devil Rays chose to stay home with their families during Hurricane Frances instead of getting out of town on Friday, then ran into travel delays this weekend, also because of the hurricane. I guess when wins get hard to come by, the Yankees will do anything to get one. It’s pretty sad, honestly, that they even filed the request with the Commissioner’s office.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

Please. Are you surprised at all? I mean seriously, are you surprised?

No, not really.
(ok, yes, I am… this is an organization constantly cited for its class and character… I realize Steinbrenner is a petulant child, but it was a hurricane!. Maybe George thought it was a Hurricane’s game)

I would like to point out that espn even blames MLB for the mishap… and correct me if I’m wrong… isn’t Stark (the writer) one of those guys who loves to rant against the Yankees?

Of course Bud Selig is no Paul Tagliabue… so the idea of preparing for anything God and nature may throw at you is foreign to MLB

either way, asking for a forfeit (directly penalizing the DRays) wasn’t the right thing to do… they could’ve complained to MLB in other ways, or just gone public.
And Stark doesn’t rant against the Yankees… I can’t remember a column of his that rants against them. But nice try to tar him with the Yankee hater brush… i know you’re hoping for another Zell Miller is a democrat moment for your slip-sliding yankees, but come on…
