Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

So, as many of you know, I moved into a new place yesterday. Last night, I tried going to the bathroom, only to find, I couldn’t find the light switches, in any room, nor, this morning could I figure out how the shower worked. After 15 minutes I finally gave up and went UPSTAIRS to the other bathroom to shower. Then, once I finished showering, it took me more than an hour to find my clothes!
Yeah, this new place is starting out great…

Light switches are always on the outside wall, nearest the corner, furthest from a window, over the ventilation duct. It’s so easy that every kid who was born here would know!
