… Jon Stewart is by far the best TV newsperson out there? If you’re not watching The Daily Show, well, you should be dragged in front of a TV and tied down until you do. Seriously, it’s an awesome show. The sad thing is that he generally does a better job of reporting on current events than the regular press.
For example, yesterday’s show dealt with the back and forth between the White House and the 9/11 Commission dealing with alleged al Qaeda ties to Iraq. He lays out, with original footage and current footage, contradictions between what the administration is saying now with what they said in the past. He even catches Cheney lying straight up. Why isn’t this stuff on all the news channels??
Update: So, I’m obviously watching last night’s episode right now (go Tivo!). Stewart has just floored me. Describing the problems with the Bush doctrine of preemption:
HAYES: I think the idea behind the Bush Doctrine is that if you support or harbor terrorists, we’ll consider you a hostile regime. I don’t consider in the aftermath of September 11th…. I don’t think it’s unreasonable.
JON STEWART: It’s not unreasonable but it’s not the point. The point is… I’ll list you four things:
developing weapons of mass destruction
inflamatory rhetoric against the U.S.
supporting and harboring terrorism
oppression of their own peopleHere’s the problem with your doctrine. You can’t tell me what country I just described. And that’s a problem when you’re talking about war.
That is, in a nutshell, the centrist anti-war position.
Hayes then goes on to say that Iran never used WMD in the Iran/Iraq war (they both lobbed chemical weapons at each other).
