To take his point further, this is a reminder that our culture today demands no sacrifices from anyone for anything. Unless you’re a soldier, of course. We’re supposedly at war but still need tax cuts and bigger government handouts. We should spend, spend, spend ignoring the real costs of massive budget deficits. We also should ignore what we’re doing overseas simply because we’re proud of our country. It’s pretty sad to think about this stuff sometimes.

I can summarize it easily: the poor are forced to take jobs in the military at low wages, while the rich spend lots of money on frilly underpants.
The only difference between now and then is that there are more people wearing frilly underpants. Overspending on consumer goods is a middle-class choice, and if they don’t spend money predictably, businesses suffer, and the government ends up with handouts again.
Buy your frilly underpants and stimulate the economy!
