I don’t tend to go in for conspiracy theories, and it all smacks a little too much of “Please, Brer Fox, don’t fling me in that briar patch,” but Notes on the Atrocities discusses a theory about Abu Ghraib making the rounds. I’ve also recently read theories that the Nick Berg video was staged, that he was a government operative, etc. etc. You know, right about now I really wish we had a national media you could trust to actually investigate the important stuff, rather than waiting for the RNC to spoon feed them stories about how Kerry flip-flops too often.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

If you’re interested, this is a pretty good round-up of the Berg theories:

As much as I like blogs and K5, I need to see someone with cred take this on. Even the cites contained in the K5 article don’t convince me yet. The blood thing is pretty bizarre, though.
