For those of you scoring at home (or even if you’re on your own), George Bush is asking for a conservative $25BB to continue the war, while Kerry is asking for a (he won’t get this much) $30BB to train teachers.

Our budget here isn’t infinite (massive defecit spending aside, Mr. Bush) and we’re long past the time for making hard decisions about where to allocate our resources. I’m finally at the point where people are giving me constrained environments to manage, and I’m looking at the tradeoffs of taking one action vs. another. Do we fix this bug, or do we implement that feature instead. I don’t have any magic bullet, but if I spent all my time extending my reach without shoring up my foundation, I’d be out on the street. Without a presidential library to arrange.
