Ok, I am not one to say that people should not stand up for what they believe in. In fact, I am pretty much in favor for reflection, discussion, and promoting what you believe is right. But something about this gay marriage issue is getting to me. There are a lot of people making a fuss over something that will affect a very few. For the most part, it will not affect the people that are against it. I can’t imagine how two people I never met and probably never will, could alter my life by what they chose to do in their own home. I know people could bring up the economical issues of insurance, tax breaks for the married, etc.., but it seems like so much more effort is wasted in the process then what would be affected in the outcome.

After reading the CNN article on the gathering at Safeco I started to think. 25,000 people showed up and spent the day there and they all pretty much believed the same thing to start with. I am not sure what the gathering was really going to accomplish outside of a symbolic gesture. If the same 25,000 people got a part time job for 8 hours, made minimum wage, and donated the money to AIDS, education, or a number of issues that face everyone today, they would have provided the charity almost $1,000,000 (without even including the $120,00 it took to rent out the stadium). Even if they donated their time to Big brothers/Big Sisters, at risk children, cleaning up the environment, that would have been 200,000 man hours that really could make a difference. Now I know this is a very simplified view and it doesn’t work exactly like that, but I can’t help but think there is so much good we can do as a society by putting forth efforts to help people instead of putting forth efforts to protesting things that probably won’t have an impact. Am I totally wrong???
