I borrowed my mom’s saree. But then, all the girls did. They’re not really proms in India, we call them “farewells”, but they’re glitzy and ritzy alright. And the car you leave in matters more than the car you show up in.
I’m so glad those days are done!

I’ve actually been to Macomb High School in IL. There is a reason why the tickets there are $10.

Hmm, I remember going to Filenes with my dad and picking out a 19 dollar dress on sale. It was acutally super cool and my dad loved it (well maybe he loved the price). Then a bunch of us took a great mini van with the fake wood panelling to the prom.. Maybe I just did not get why it was such a big deal?

As a teacher who has chaperoned proms, I have to say it is WAY more fun going as an adult! My junior prom, I had a dress that I got at a used clothing store, a pink lace dress that was clearly a bridesmaid dress, and I clearly remember the sneering looks of my fellow chick classmates… That night sucked. That was the same year my mom got divorced, she became unemployed b/c she’d been working with my dad, and she and I were receiving charity. I think she felt pretty badly that I had to buy my own dress, so she saved the next year so I could get a great Laura Ashley dress, not a prom gown, just a cool dress. I wasn’t what I’d call the “prom” type, but by that point, I’d gotten over the fact that high school just wasn’t my place, and I had a blast that night, sober, too, with my tripping boyfriend. There is this really funny picture of the two of us that my mom took — we’re standing in front of a flag that my mom always had flying from our house. It’s like this weird 1950’s all-American type picture. it cracks me up — I love it! Proms defintely are crazy expensive if kids/’rents let them be, but they don’t have to be.
