Interesting article in the globe today. In case people don’t know, there were a bunch of riots (big shocker there) in Allston/Brighton and in kenmore sq, where cars were overturned, fires were set, a few people were seriously injured, and other crazy stuff in general.

What I find sort of upsetting in this article was the comment made in regards to Liquor sales being allowed on sundays for many cities in MA (including Boston):

Students found it easier to buy more alcohol under the new law, Menino said: “They were able to run to the store when they ran out of beverage and stock up. It’s wrong.”

I find this comment sort of irritating, because it leads to the question in my mind: well, why don’t we ban liquor sales altogether, so no matter what day a game is played on (or any other potential riot inducing situation) we won’t have these crazy kids who are influenced by “Jazz and Liquor” causing havoc in our fair city. (get the Chicago reference??? ;) )

What also bothered me was that they supposidly understaffed the police presence for that night, claiming that they had no idea it would be that crazy. I am not really sure what they thought would happen, considering all the past times we have won, or even lost major games. It always turns out like this, stupid people get drunk, or not even, and use this as an excuse to riot. Why is this a college issue? My bet is many of these students to whom they refer to are not even living in the college dorms. When did colleges become baby sitters?

Anyhow, I don’t approve of the riots, but I don’t think that it is the colleges’ fault, nor is it the liquor stores being open, since any bar open was selling booze to people too. The other riots were just as bad, and there were no sunday liquor sales open then.
