Surely they don’t think oil or other fossil fuels can be found on Mars… I can’t tell if the latest Joe Conason is a must read, or shrill conspiracy theory.

Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

Unless we don’t know a lot about Mars, fossil fuels are probably out.
I think the idea isn’t about what they’ll find there. It’s about dealing with pure expenses of running a company. NASA contracts have for as long as they’ve existed been about funding R&D. If one believes that we’re going to deplete all the easily accessible oil reserves soon, some of the deep drilling technology that might be needed to take core sample or find water on Mars will also be applicable to drilling even deeper for oil.
That’s just speculation. The day-to-day potential earnings from a NASA contract make it enticing enough… if you can turn around and sell the technology that’s developed for some earthly purpose, well… good for you.
