Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

several answers… first, oil.
second, they are cracking down on this stuff… (hence the arrest).
third, at least in this country, you can still read and buy the Anarchists Cookbook from Amazon and not get arrested.

You’ll have to pardon me if I’m unimpressed with their level of interest in cracking down on this stuff when no fewer than 3 reports in just this last week that they’re NOT doing a very good job of it. Plus, I also feel quite a bit like this is nothing more than PR.
