Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

If you’re interested in this type of issue, I highly recommend reading Fast Food Nation. It covers this exact issue. His position in the book is that factory farming is the result of the massive size and growth of the fast food companies in this country. It’s a great read and covers a lot of the issues surrounding farming in the U.S.

I’ve read excerpts. My roommate has the book. (I’m currently reading something entitled “Chinese Takeout,” ironically, enough.) To top your recommendation, I suggest you read Toxic Sludge is Good For you. Rivetting and eye-opening.
