Newsweek’s Daniel Gross explains the Consumer Price Index (here’s the official BLS site) in a very simple video. I could do without the goofy sound effects, but it’s a good, 2 minute explanation of how the government tracks inflation.
Per David Simon’s Berkeley talk, though, the video doesn’t go into why this matters. Perhaps they’ll cover that in the next installment of the Economics 101 series.

Hey heidi, I wonder if too much reading can do this? Good experiment idea? Maybe bad poetry?

I do think that if I were to conduct any experiment it would have to look like this: Okay class, we are now going to read as many “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books as possible before we puke. At my estimatred rate, we should make it about 1/4 of the way through one book before the floor is completely covered with our last meal….
