OK, so I lost a bet to my hockey team, and I need to dye my goatee/mustache purple. It’s temporary; I plan to shave it off the next day. But I have never dyed my hair, and I desperately need help/guidance. Please chime in!

Looks like a performance at NYU (where she was a student for a few years). She really can sing (though she has a few misses playing the piano). There’s talent there, covered these days in a blond wig/hairdo and heavy makeup. Do your best to ignore the goofy MC, if you can.

Get yourself some manic panic — it’s temporary. go to any hipster punk type store — maybe even hot topic. or perhaps urban outfitters — manic panic is available lots of places these days. in my day (tee-hee) — we had to use kool-aid. hey — take a picture — i’d like to see it. but also — your hair is dark… are you going to bleach it first? otherwise it won’t really show the purple….
September 22nd, 2003 at 11:30 AM
Yes, bleach is a total must. I actually got the bleach at the hipster store, and kool aid at Store 24. Any warnings? I definitely don’t want to dye my chin!
September 23rd, 2003 at 9:46 PM
Heidi mentioned that both Kool Aid and Manic Panic will dye your scalp as well… so be careful with the chin if you don’t want a temporarily purple chin.

Pictures coming soon. Hair bleached to orange, wouldn’t take dye. Face had no such reservations, and turned purple. Great fun.
Pictures! A cautionary tale for those who might ask me for advice.
September 24th, 2003 at 11:10 AM
Maybe you should get some sort of tattoo to cover up the purple dye??

I’m the wrong person to ask. Didn’t you see those photos? Go to the local piercing store and ask what to do.

May 11th, 2004 at 7:58 AM
I see Dan is now our resident hair expert.
To Stacie: I suggest you go to a salon and consider asking their advice and/or begging your folks for the cash to have them fix it… I’ll defer to the folks here who know more about this stuff, but in general that seems like good advice.
May 11th, 2004 at 9:22 AM
These photos should serve as a warning to anyone asking me for advice. Sujal, how do we show up so high on search engines?
May 11th, 2004 at 10:06 AM
I’m just that good, what can I say Dan….
actually, one thing I’ve noticed is that sujal.net is ranked 6/10 on Google (high for a personal home page…) because of some of my free software projects and because I have posted on the Linux Kernel mailing list, am-info and a bunch of other places with high ratings… some of that is rubbing off on FatMixx, I guess. Also, I use trackbacks on all my post and so we show up as trackbacks to some pretty popular blogs out there….
at least, those are the only guesses I have right now.

Marissa– There is only one solution. Shave your head then spray paint it black with Ron Popeil’s GLH. After all, it gives you great looking hair.
August 11th, 2004 at 10:12 PM
Ok, to give the poor girl a real answer. Most “black” hair dyes aren’t really black. Your best bet is to actually go to a professional to have it done. If you keep applying too many chemicals to your hair without knowing what you’re doing, you risk seriously damaging it to the point where it falls out, or breaks so easily that the only style you can maintain is *very* short. If you absolutely *cannot* afford to even go to the HairCuttery or some place like that, they go for a dark brown or auburn permanent hair dye like Clairol, etc. *Do not* attempt to use a product like Manic Panic on it – that’s never going to give you a “natural” color. Many years ago I found out that darker shades of Natural Instincts, which is supposed to be temporary, are actually permanent. Thus, you might try a dark shade of their product, on the theory that it might be less damaging to your hair…
August 12th, 2004 at 3:06 PM
At least someone answered the poor girl! I can’t think of three people I’d trust *less* than Dan, Sujal and Bram when it came to hair advice.
August 12th, 2004 at 3:43 PM
Hey, Sujal has great hair (through luck and genetics, more than effort) and Bram’s hair is indestructible. I’m just a bad person to take advice from because I’m malicious.

Purple KoolAid for all? Or would you say I should go for red, what with my skin tone and all?
August 12th, 2004 at 5:37 PM
Tami, red is not a flavor! Jeez. You should definitely go for Mandarina tangerine, which has three important notes, according to the marketing materials:
* Introduced for our valued and loyal Hispanic consumers!
* Mandarina-Tangerine is a good source of Vitamin C and is caffeine free.
* Enjoy this drink with your families during Cinco de Mayo and your favorite Hispanic holidays.
August 12th, 2004 at 8:23 PM
Who knew Kool Aid was so multicultural? But what if I want to drink it on a non-Hispanic holiday? Or dye my hair?
August 15th, 2004 at 2:21 PM
I need a bit of help, I have had bleached hair for the last 3 years, i decided the other day to dye it brown, i chose a coclour with a red tone so it wouldnt go green and its now a really nice shade of brown… only problem is…. i totally miss being a blonde!! I want to have lots of highlights put back into my hair but i wondered whether the hair dresser would do it because it was bleached before but now with brown on top, i would call them but its a sunday and i want to know tonight.
Anyone know if i can have bleach highlights over alleady bleached but now brown hair?
Thanx,
Rachx
PS Sorry if this is in the wrong place!
August 15th, 2004 at 2:53 PM
Oh, you can definitely get the hairdresser to re-dye your hair. They’ll do whatever you want, as long as you show up with a wad of cash and a heap of attitude. I’d love to give you more advice, but I need to know a few things…how old are you and where do you live? How do you pronounce Rachx? Did you try emailing Marissa (sickfantasychick) above? She might be able to help you out.
August 15th, 2004 at 3:27 PM
Whether a hair dresser who actually knows what they’re doing would put highlights in your hair at this stage really depends on the condition of you hair – how harsh the bleach you were using was, and how much damage it did to the structure of your hair. I would recommend going to someone who specializes in color/highlighting (try a Colorworks or Aveda shop – avoid places like the Hair Cuttery, etc. for something like this unless you absolutely *cannot* afford anything else), and ask them to tell you candidly whether they think it would damage your hair. If the hairdresser says not to do it, I’d highly recommend respecting that. Trust me, I’ve completely fried my hair in the past. And since you hair is dead, once you’ve damaged it, the only cure is to wait for it all to grow out so you can start over.
August 15th, 2004 at 3:30 PM
Or you can invest in a good blond wig to wear after you’ve shaved your head. I have a few friends who have taken this route, but they were already married. Why do married guys like shaved heads?
August 23rd, 2004 at 8:09 PM
hahahaha… you guys crack my shit up! beautiful job on the goatee dying. hows your skin??
August 23rd, 2004 at 11:10 PM
Let’s just say that I bonded with a jar of Noxzema. The orange beard with purple snout went over well in the locker room, but I was clean-shaven the next day, with a hint of “slept in the mud”

i have been dying my hair soo much i have had it every color i recently bleached it and i tried to dye it brown but my roots came out brown while the rest of my hair came out grey what do i do. i really need help
September 19th, 2004 at 2:18 PM
Again, scrape together the money to go to a professional. Without knowing what exactly you’ve been using on your hair, that’s the best we can do.
September 20th, 2004 at 11:37 AM
i used revlon colorsilk and after the bad results i went to a sallys hair supply and the lady there told me to use a level 2 hair dye and then after it faded i would be able to use a level 3 hair dye so i took her advice and the roots still came out better but the ends are not as bad as they were they are holding somecolor so its easy to pull off but how can i fix my hair completley .i cant go to a proffesional my mom wont pay for it i am totally alone when it comes to my hair . she would rather it be platinum than anyother color but i just get bored with the same color …….can u help
September 20th, 2004 at 12:05 PM
I think the advice you received from Sallys is probably on the mark. At this point, your best bet for fixing it completely is to grow it out and start new. In the interim, you might try supplementing the level 2 dye with a temporary color wash.
September 20th, 2004 at 11:45 PM
I definately colored my hair tonight with revlon colorsilk (it sucks) and it turned my roots orange & the rest of my hair the color i actually wanted.. i need to know how i can fix the roots? my hair was died brown b4 with blondehighlights , soo i think that is why but now i dont want to ruin the color i like , just for the roots? is there anyway i can just fix them?
September 21st, 2004 at 6:17 PM
i had a simular problem except my roots came out fine while the rest turn silver and i finally fixed it i used revlon high deminsions hairdye and it worked it all came out the same color maybe it will wor for you

hi im a hair colour technician for toni and guy in england bit of advice dont colour hair at home get it done properly!!!
October 3rd, 2004 at 7:37 AM
Ive died my hair a really dark brown, well almost black recently (im usually a light/medium brown). It was great but now im starting to get regrowth and i want my old hair colour back! i have long hair so im not going to cut it and wait for it to grow out, so i dont know what to do. Is there any way of stripping the colour completely so im left with my natural colour? and if i dye it to my natural colour will it completely stuff up the colour thats already in my hair…like the two toned effect? also, what does a colour stripper do? they say its so bad for your hair but how? oh yeah and where do u get it from?….hehe so many questions! thanks!
October 3rd, 2004 at 11:40 AM
There are color strippers, but, again, they are best applied by a professional. I’m not sure I would try applying them myself – it could do more harm than good. (Basically, they break down the bonds that hold the color to your hair. The result won’t be exactly your natural color, though, since the chemicals will slighly alter the underlying hair color. Using over the counter hair dye with stripped hair tends to lead to rather unpredictable results, so if you do it, I’d lay off the dye for a while.) As for trying to dye over the color back to your natural hair color – especially with a darker undershade, you won’t be able to get an exact match doing it yourself. The best you could hope for would be something that blends. In the future, stick to non-permanent dyes. For more, go here and here and here.

Ok i dyed my hair brown. i wanted it dark but bot this dark. does anyone know of and hair products like shampoo’s to help lighten my hair. or at least take the color out. its a permanent
October 8th, 2004 at 6:53 PM
Just washing with shampoo will fade the color over the course of a few weeks. Check the links in the post before yours to see at-home options for changing the color of brown hair without chemicals.
October 20th, 2004 at 5:58 PM
My hair is naturally a dark brown, but i’ve had it dyed to a light brown for about 2 years now. I want to dye it black, but not permanently. If I use a non-permanent hair dye, will it be hard to get the black color out after about 4 weeks? I’m just nervous that the black will stick around longer than it’s supposed to since my hair has already been dyed with permanent hair color.
October 20th, 2004 at 7:54 PM
That’s definitely a risk. I would avoid any Level 2 and 3 products. Level 1 products are more of a “film” that goes over top of your hair, and thus are less likely to become permanent. If you’re still not sure, call the Clairol hotline and ask – it’s on their webpage.

I have recently died my hair jet black and hate it!!!
Is their any way i can fade it to a dark brown tonight, at home
without spending alot of $, or damaging my hair any further than is.
PLEASE answer this tonight ,have simpathy i look so bad and my complection is so drown out its embarasing to go out in public!
October 21st, 2004 at 7:42 PM
The only way to get black down to dark brown safely is to use a color stripper. But if you do it yourself – USE A TEST PATCH (i.e., cut off a few strands of hair on the underside of your head, and test the product out on that before applying it to your whole head).
October 29th, 2004 at 4:57 AM
I bleached my hair all over yesterday and I dont like it! Ive school in two days and I need it to be gone by then. Can I dye it dark brown now? Will it turn into green or something? PLEASE HELP!
October 29th, 2004 at 8:55 AM
I need help. i had black hair then i decided to bleach it but it turned out to be a reddish/brown i was hoping it wouls come out lighter. My goal is a a light golden brown but my hair wont pick up any color wat so ever. I have tried to dye it a light blonde but it didnt work. What color should i try ? i wouldnt want to bleach it again my hair is already fried as it is.
October 29th, 2004 at 9:01 AM
Angie, sounds like you dodged a bullet compared to the rest of the poor souls here. Why not enjoy your hair the way it is for a while? At least until (ex-)fake-redhead can come back and tell you how to fix it.
October 29th, 2004 at 10:43 AM
should we just turn off comments to this thread?
October 29th, 2004 at 10:55 AM
I love this thread. It’s the best ever. Please leave it open.
October 29th, 2004 at 11:52 AM
Until (ex-)fake-redhead returns, most of the home color products you can buy have a hotline you can call for advice if the color doesn’t work out. See if you can find that. If not, go the a drugstore and check out a box of Clairol dye, they definitely have a hotline.
I wouldn’t try re-applying another product without some kind of guidance.
October 29th, 2004 at 12:27 PM
ok, I thought you were hinting that it was getting old.
Bring on the hair dye questions!
October 29th, 2004 at 2:38 PM
Help! I paid tons of money to get blonde highlights, and i don’t see much of a difference. Where did I go wrong?????
October 29th, 2004 at 2:47 PM
Well, AmericanMaid, you should make sure that you’re going to a reputable stylist. Many stylists only swing the scissors around your hair, never actually cutting it. Even worse, many times the goop they use for highlights is nothing more than a mixture of soy milk and sour cream. As you can see by the success stories above, the best way to color your hair is to do it yourself.
October 29th, 2004 at 4:10 PM
Angie, I have no idea what you used to “bleach” your hair, but a lot of dark hair tends to pull red when you begin stripping the color out. I know that I personally can only get a light brown (with no red in it) if I take my hair all the way down to a light blonde, and then put in lowlights to get it brown. (ALL OF THIS WAS DONE BY A PROFESSIONAL. DO NOT TRY AT HOME.) If your hair is already fried, I would *strongly* suggest you give up on your dreams of light brown hair, at least until (1) you get it in better condition, and (2) can afford to have a professional do it. (You can, however, play with your hair color in the interim by doing things like rinsing it with hot tea to bring out brown highlights, or other, safe at home remedies.) As for (1), a few hints:
1. Try to only use shampoo on your hair every other day, or every two days, depending upon the oiliness of your scalp. In between, just rinse with water.
2. Once a week, apply a deep, thick conditioner (like Aussie 3 miniute miracle) to damp hair, and cover with a shower cap. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse out.
3. Consider adding something like VO5 hot oil, or Philosophy’s Breaking Point to your hair every week/every other week. If you can’t afford those products, olive oil or mayo works well (just (1) go light on the mayo, and (2) be sure to wash it out, otherwise you’re stuck with greasy hair).
Calynn M- try using a level 1 product, or a color wash at first – it’ll give you some color, but it won’t be permanent (you can also try steeping tea bags in hot water, and pouring through your hair – it will give you a light brown color). Check with a professional or the Clairol hotline before using anything more permanent. Also, check the links in post 34 for other at-home ways to change your hair color without using chemicals or dyes.
