So back in the days (ok, my days, which was not too long ago) BU had a huge stundent over-flow problem for housing. Even with all the brownstones and gigantic prison-like dorms, there was never enough housing. So, those who found themselves sans dorm, were lodged in the closest (partially BU owned) hotel. This meant living at Ho-Jo’s in Kenmore for a semester, or even living across the river in the other Ho-jo’s.
Personally I was not too thrilled with the idea of this, since you could not really call this dorm home (ie put up posters and other hangings). However it looks like students this year got an upgrade and get to stay in the fancy new Hotel Commenwealth.
For those of you who though I was going midly insane when I mentioned issues with the facade of the new hotel, it turns out that I was in fact correct, and all the neighbors agreeded that ugly yellow-plastic does not look too upscale. So, it will be replaced with stone later this year I believe. It is still sad to thing of the “charm” that was once kemore is gone (no more IHop, that strangely closed from 5-5:30 am and lead to immense frustration when you were just getting out of lab and really wanted something to eat, ie cheap pancakes. I also sort of miss the great club with the occasional knife fights, and the Rat). One note to make is that had I known that some of these hotels allowed students access to their pools/hot tubs/ and gyms, I might have re-considered my position on staying there.
