In reference to a previous Blog many months back that discussed the movie Bowling for Columbine:
I just read an intersting little article in the Boston Globe today, talking of Bush’s attempt to reform the welfare program. Basically it is set to put single parents (or anyone on welfare) to work, the so called “welfare to work” program. Basically, single parents are shipped to various minimum wage jobs to work 40+ hrs a week, with little chance of making enough money to pay the bills, let alone daycare for their children. On top of this, the parents are not learning skills that will aide them in getting better paying jobs to pull them out of the poverty level. Mr. Moore brought up the point that the kids left at home were getting into trouble due to lack of the parent being able to be around to properly take care of them.
One of the other “great ideas” this reform has is to encourage marriage and preach about abstinance before marriage. Just this alone makes me nervous, since I feel this might encourage people to get into some very bad marriages and stay. But, on top of this, these programs are also banned to discuss any other forms of contraception. Frankly this to me seems absurd. Pre-marital sex happens. It has been happening since the begining. Not talking about sex, how it happens, and what you can do to prevent pregnancy, leads to a generation of very very ignorant people, pretty much taking us back to the time of people believing that taking a bath after sex prevents pregnacy, and women being ostracized for becoming pregnant outside of marriage.
Anyhow I am rambling, please read the article and make up your own mind
