An article at Boston.com suggests that the state of Massachusetts is considering restricting use of the state’s fleet of SUVs in order to cut fuel costs and car costs. Among the interesting facts is that the SUVs cost 50% more to operate than a basic sedan. What’s even more amazing to me is the number of people in the state government who have state provided SUVs. We’re not talking little ones, either, but Chevy Tahoe’s and the like.

Another interesting portion of the article:

State workers would be encouraged not to use a state car at all - in favor of Zipcars, whenever possible, though it’s not clear how far the policy would extend.

Foy, formerly president of the Conservation Law Foundation, a major environmental advocacy group, is a big fan of Zipcars as a way to cut down on the need for every city dweller to own and operate a car.

I am not a Romney fan, but this is a great idea and long overdue. Whether they use Zipcars or just insist on mass transit (another suggestion), reducing the number of SUVs clogging the roadways would be great. The article is interesting in general, and well worth reading.

Of course, I am a Zipcar member and love it. :)
