It’s funny, but I find a lot of my new music from TV commercials. Unfortunately, it takes some investigating to figure out who wrote what music because the music isn’t always publicized. Some companies, like VW, have a place on their web site dedicated to this type of info. Others, like Mitsubishi don’t mention their commercials at all. Of course, VW has already released a compilation CD of some of their commercial music. So, they might be the exception rather than a norm.
I’ve found some good resources on matching music to commercials, though. Here they are:
- Clipland
- Commercial Breaks and Beats: UK Television Advert Music Database
As a result, I’ve found out that the cool VW commercial they’re showing on the Loews commercial reel has music by ELO called Mr. Blue Sky.
Now, who owns an ELO CD anymore?
There are some cool finds buried in there, and it’s a lot of fun to figure this stuff out.
On another note, I’ve noticed that I find “new” music from the companies focused on younger consumers. Like VW, or the Mitsubishi Montero commercial (which turned me on to telepopmusik). On the other hand, companies like Lexus (which used a Chemical Brothers track on one of their recent commercials) tend to focus on established artists, even if it’s electronica or some alternative style. I realize this is probably a function of their advertising agency and probably by design, anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.
Update: Feel free to ask questions in the comments below. Regular readers are happy to answer, as am I.

Hyundai Elantra - the commercial starts with a guy driving the streets, as if it’s an early morning and noone and no other cars are around. He’s listening to this really peaceful song, then when he parks his car on the side of the street and opens his car door - all these cars appear on the street and we’re back to reality.

Alexandra #679 and Kloudlicker #705, I have what you’re looking for.
The song for the Ivory Bath and Body Wash commercial (simplyivory.ca aired in Toronto) is…
“Postcards from Italy” by Beirut.
It took me MONTHS, literally MONTHS to find this beautiful song, and I stumbled onto it from sheer serendipity.
Here are the request pages I put up on adtunes.com (http://adtunes.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=36367) and answerbank.com (http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Adverts/Question401565.html).

Hi I have been wonder as well what the name of that song John Legend was talking about and I do believe that it is not Nina Simone’s “Backlash” but it is called “I’m gonna leave you” off of the “Four Women, The Complete Nina Simone on Phillips Records”.

THE JOE NEEDS HELP. HE HEARD A SONG ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO AGO ON A COMMERCIAL. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT HE DOESNT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE COMMERCIAL WAS FOR. ALL I KNOW IS THAT IT WAS A SLOW MOVING CAMERA OVER A BUNCH OF GUITARS WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GUITAR MUSIC PLAYING OVER IT I HAVE EVER HEARD. I ALMOST WANT TO SAY IT SOUNDED LIKE SOMETHING JOHN MAYER WOULD HAVE DONE BUT IM NOT SURE. I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE BUSY, BUT HELPING ME FIND THIS SONG FROM THAT CAR COMMERCIAL WILL SAVE THE JOE. IF ANYONE CAN DO IT…ITS YOU GUYS

#763 - The music in the Lexus ad featuring John Legend is “Backlash Blues” by Nina Simone. The first bit of lyrics you hear in the ad are “…all you’ve got to offer are…”
Check out the ad here: http://platformlaunchaction.blogspot.com/search/label/John%20Legend
The lyrics to “Backlash Blues”:
Mr. Backlash, Mr. Backlash
Just who do think I am
You raise my taxes, freeze my wages
And send my son to Vietnam
You give me second class houses
And second class schools
Do you think that alla colored folks
Are just second class fools
Mr. Backlash, I’m gonna leave you
With the backlash blues
When I try to find a job
To earn a little cash
ALL YOU GOT TO OFFER
Is your mean old white backlash
But the world is big
Big and bright and round
And it’s full of folks like me
Who are black, yellow, beige and brown
Mr. Backlash, I’m gonna leave you
With the backlash blues
Mr. Backlash, Mr. Backlash
Just what do you think I got to lose
I’m gonna leave you
With the backlash blues
You’re the one will have the blues
Not me, just wait and see
Listen to Nina Simone sing it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCgwTwLm_vI starting about halfway through the video.

looking for a song from a commercial wherein a woman is driving a car along a highway… not sure of the make of the car… the song is a rock song with a female vocalist. she kind of howls during the chorus of the song… sort of a howl leading into the next line of the song…
i believe the commercial aired between 1998 and 2000…

to 785…..i don’t think i’ve seen that commercial, but i know that “these words” by Natasha Bedingfield goes “i love you, i love you, i love you”
but, like 733, i really want to know who does the song in the VW commercial. There’s the slam poet, then a guy yells out from a car “3 vee-dubs under 17,000 dollars” and the poet gets all happy. I hear vocals but can’t make out lyrics…. Can anyone help with this?
May 17th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Does anyone know the title/artist of the song that plays on the AMC channel sighting various movie clips. It goes something like this… take me away, i wanna go, gotta get away, i wanna go, take me far away. I think I am the tenth person asking for this song!
May 17th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
I’m also trying to find this elusive song from the AMC commercial with the lyrics “Take me Away, I wanna go……”. To add on to Ed’s note, I think this commercial is only available in CANADA, and it’s an alternative band (ie. Good Charlotte, Dashboard Confidentials, etc..etc.). Please, help us out..anybody!
May 17th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
I agree with #802 and 803….let’s find this song..

May 19th, 2007 at 3:25 pm
Alright, so I´ve been looking for this AMC song for soo long it´s not even funny.
I can´t believe how hard it is to find this bloody song. =[
May 19th, 2007 at 5:26 pm
Just like 733, 801, etc., I really like the sound of the “Poet” VW commercial, and was wondering who did the song at the end.
The commercial is on the VW website, but there are no lyrics to search by, and it’s not on any of the sites that promise song titles for TV commercials.
May 19th, 2007 at 5:39 pm
Kirk #771 - that song from the Discovery Channel “wonders never seize” is not Virtual Insanity… it does sound like Jamiroquai, but it’ not from the Virtual Insanity CD… anyone knows which song it really is??????
May 19th, 2007 at 6:17 pm
Followup to #811 “wonders never cease” by Morcheeba the Antidote CD
May 20th, 2007 at 11:59 pm
#811: Are you referring to the AMC commercial that is a collage of movie clips? The song is a fast paced song with an indie feel to it. With a lyric something like: tonight is the best night of the rest of your life
If so, I’ve searching for that song for ages too!
Anybody know anything about this song?
May 21st, 2007 at 5:04 pm
Also interested in the song posted by 733, 801, 812 That VW poet clip–short as it is–gets stuck in my head. Anyone?
May 22nd, 2007 at 2:18 am
on the AMC website they do have a section that features all the music they use (almost all). i checked up on every band mentioned and none of them are who we’re looking for
May 22nd, 2007 at 4:09 am
Does anyone know the video that is on the Zune during the commercial (The most current commercial)?
May 22nd, 2007 at 1:24 pm
The AMC website has only the featured artist for march still listed as the monthly artist. They are a few months behind. Hopefully next month we can find the song title everyone is looking for.
May 23rd, 2007 at 12:40 am

For those of you looking for Dawn Landes’s Straight Lines (the awesome song used to begin the (not so awesome) Axe ad “Paris”), I contacted the her label and they promise that the album with that track will be on iTunes real soon now.
The album you’re looking for is called 234. Hope that helps. I’ll post an update when I hear back.
I also sent VW a note about the Poet ad. Haven’t heard back, but again, I’ll post if I hear anything back.
May 24th, 2007 at 12:23 am
Also, you can listen to Straight Lines at Dawn’s MySpace page.
May 24th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

I simply CANNOT trace down the lyrics. if you figure it out email me Woahh-delly@hotmail.com Thanks a million:)
May 25th, 2007 at 1:04 pm
Sometimes, you can switch the tv to sap or whatever the mode is for hearing impaired / text only and you’ll catch the song/artist name. Since AMC features the music during their promos of “Movies at 8, Perhaps a good chance exists that the song will be highlighted in the text.
May 25th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
The AMC comercial doesn’t have thr song title or artist. I tried to look for it/
May 26th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
The song from the Axe commercial, Dawn Landes’s Straight Lines, is now available on iTunes. Click the button below for a link to the song and album:

does anyone know who is singing the song in the Ford commercial, it is a women and she sings” I’d climb the highest mountain….” I have tried to find this. pls help.
May 30th, 2007 at 11:49 am
There’s a Chevy Cobalt ad with the partial lyrics “I’d climb the highest mountain, I’d swim the seven seas…..”. That song is titled “Two of Us” and is performed by Lily Frost. Is that the ad you’re thinking of?

Let me try this again. In response to geofree, I offer the following info regarding the mystery song at AMC: Could it be one of the many female bands under an older yet still present indie-punk feminist movement known as “riot grrl”? For additional information on this phenomenon, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riot_Grrrl
May 31st, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Oops…Logan answered my question on May 28th. Sorry for not checking more closely.
May 31st, 2007 at 9:07 pm
hey logan,
i’m pretty sure that the “riot grrl” movement had something to do with the song, but the one on the AMC commercial is sung by a man. perhaps a different version….
May 31st, 2007 at 10:17 pm
Hi Calvin. Thanks for the info. Sure kept me from needlessly chasing after female singers. Is the song, ad, etc. online somewhere?
May 31st, 2007 at 11:04 pm
i have yet to find the ad or song anywhere. i have emailed amc, but have had no reply. i’ll keep the search going and everyone posted.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:20 pm
i found a copy of the ad on youtube. someone added it a few days ago. hope this can help narrow the search? the comments on youtube suggest that maybe amc had someone privatley sing it for the promo. also a great collection of some classic movies if anyones interested.

thats the website for the clorox mermaid commercial music.. you can DL it to your comp! its not the finished product but its still really good
June 3rd, 2007 at 4:59 pm
I e-mailed AMC and finally got a response. However the link they gave me only led me to the page with the list of artists, which didn’t help at all seeing as we’ve checked them all.
Calvin, you have helped out big for the meantime, thanks man
June 6th, 2007 at 1:21 am
Sujal- Thanks for writing the VW company about that music. I went to the website and indeed it’s just an original piece of music just for the commercial. Too bad!
June 8th, 2007 at 12:34 am
no problem, Johannah
June 9th, 2007 at 12:16 am
wow this is crazy, i think everyone on the web is looking for this song, im usually post on imdb.com and people are going nuts about it over there. damn amc and that addictive song, I WANT IT, let me know if you hear of anything
June 9th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
The recent Liberty Mutual tv ad song by Hem is now available from iTunes. “The Part Where You Let Go”. Nice tune.
June 10th, 2007 at 10:33 am
The songs on the Old Navy commercials are by the Rogue Traders, an indie band from Australia. The best one is definitely “Believer.” They are on myspace music.
June 10th, 2007 at 10:39 am
In reply to #823, the jewelery commerical. Type in the lyrics to google and you’ll come up with a Cat Stevens song that Cat Powers (a woman) covered. I can’t find a place to download the whole song though.
June 10th, 2007 at 9:35 pm
In reply to 860 who replied to 823, the Cat Power cover song has never been a complete song and it strongly appears she has no intention of releasing a completed version of the song. The Liz Durrett cover of Cat Stevens’ “How Can I Tell You” is similar in style to Cat Power’s version.
June 11th, 2007 at 11:43 am
Unlike the other AMC TV searches I am looking for the song that has no lyrics in the clip, is used for AMC Sunday Movie as recently as June 10th 2007. It plays against their yellow and black basic graphics intro after an ad break. Its drving me nuts becuase I swear I kow the song and can’t place it.
June 11th, 2007 at 4:04 pm
does anyone know the name and artist of the song in the LG steamwasher and dryer commercial? It sounds like zydeco music. A woman is traveling on a crowded bus, she goes home and steam washes and steam dries the dress that she is wearing, she puts it back on and goes out again.
June 11th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Joe b (#863): Is this the ad you’re talking about?

Anyone know the song on the new Jeep commercial? Some of the lyrics go like this:
“there’s a time for us to let go, there’s a time for holding on”
The commercial starts with a piano solo.
Thanks in advance!
June 13th, 2007 at 1:35 am
Does ANYONE know the singer/song in the tv commercial - I don’t even know what the commercial is for - it’s a woman singing, slightly deep voice, acoustic music, some lyrics are “is this the time when you” something something something…. Please help! I’ve been watching tv just to find that commercial so I can try to look it up… The whole commercial, song and images and all, is very ethereal and floaty.
June 13th, 2007 at 9:22 am
The new Jeep commercial song, “Time of Our Lives”, Paul Van Dyk, is the correct song, but it is NOT the correct arrangement and is not the arrangement in the commercial.
If someone does find the correct arrangement that would be wonderful. It’s really a good song but the commercial arrangement is better than the “Reflections” version.
June 13th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
In response to techboard regarding the Jeep ad; you’ll find it to be common practice for ad agencies to “tweak” an existing song which usually is no longer than 30 seconds or so duration. These modifications (mixes) are then used in the ad and sometimes become copyright of the agency or their client. Not always but this is pretty much the norm.
June 13th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
To Tracey #871. It sounds like you’re referring to the Liberty Mutual ad which uses the song “The Part Where You Let Go” by Hem. It recently became available at iTunes and perhaps other “stores”.
June 14th, 2007 at 2:13 am
Dear Sol,
Although you may think there is an easy response to your original
question, it’s a bit more difficult. Since we have such a vast musical
library, sometimes it is hard to locate the name and artist of the promo
music we use. Your request has been passed along in hopes of finding
the information you seek. Thanks for your patience.

Hey out there, who knows the song & artist of the Blackberry Curve commercial? It goes like this: “I really really like you, I said I really really like you…” She sounds British.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
Hi There, Please tell me who is the artist & song of the Blackberry Curve commercial where she sings: “I really really like you, I said I really really like you…” She sounds British.

Duke, the song sounds like the opening to Ride by The Vines.
Sheryl Crow recorded a very similar song for the Disney Film Cars, called Real Gone. Both songs are available on iTunes.
Ride - The Vines (iTunes Link, available in DRM Free iTunes Plus)
Real Gone - Sheryl Crow (iTunes link)
Hope that helps. I like both songs.

This was posted to a different thread, but I want to make sure it gets posted here for other people looking for the music to the Cadillac CTS Bose edition commercial:
——–
The song called Start, by The Jam.
Cadillac is actually very good about putting their music information online for their commercials:

to #823… the diamond necklace commercial is a cover of Cat Stevens’ “how can I tell you” done by an artist called Cat Power. However, it apparently cannot be purchased, nor do they have any intention of releasing it for purchase as you can read for yourself at the following site. They’re being huge dicks about it.

re: Jhonny, Lexus commercial
According to a post on the Adtunes.com forum from 2 years ago, the music in the Lexus RX 400H commercial isn’t from anywhere. It was composed specifically for the commercial by Sébastien Tellier.

Does anybody know the name of the song that was played in the commercials for the ABC show “October Road?” I looked in the episode music guide, but it was only played for the Ads. I know it’s sung by a female, and it’s on the radio occasionally.
