It’s funny, but I find a lot of my new music from TV commercials. Unfortunately, it takes some investigating to figure out who wrote what music because the music isn’t always publicized. Some companies, like VW, have a place on their web site dedicated to this type of info. Others, like Mitsubishi don’t mention their commercials at all. Of course, VW has already released a compilation CD of some of their commercial music. So, they might be the exception rather than a norm.
I’ve found some good resources on matching music to commercials, though. Here they are:
- Clipland
- Commercial Breaks and Beats: UK Television Advert Music Database
As a result, I’ve found out that the cool VW commercial they’re showing on the Loews commercial reel has music by ELO called Mr. Blue Sky.
Now, who owns an ELO CD anymore?
There are some cool finds buried in there, and it’s a lot of fun to figure this stuff out.
On another note, I’ve noticed that I find “new” music from the companies focused on younger consumers. Like VW, or the Mitsubishi Montero commercial (which turned me on to telepopmusik). On the other hand, companies like Lexus (which used a Chemical Brothers track on one of their recent commercials) tend to focus on established artists, even if it’s electronica or some alternative style. I realize this is probably a function of their advertising agency and probably by design, anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.
Update: Feel free to ask questions in the comments below. Regular readers are happy to answer, as am I.

someone please help.
does anyone now the artist name or song title of the song used in the new Kellogs rice krispy commercials? the one where the mom and kid are listening to the cereal snap crackle and pop? same song used the the kellogs commercial where the mom and daughters are making rice krispy treats. i think the same song was used in 50 First Dates. Its kinda got the hawaiian slack key guitar sound. no words, only humming.

October 21st, 2006 at 3:05 am
just want to point out, the Royksopp song in the commercial isn’t the same as in the video - the commercial version is a more downbeat remix. It was written with Erland Oye who also sings and is half of the duo Kings of Convenience - who this song resembles much more than Royksopp. If you like the song, pick up Erland Oye’s solo cd where his style is mixed with beats.
October 21st, 2006 at 7:42 am
I’ve scoured the net and can’t find this anywhere.
What is the little piano jingle used in the A.G. Edwards spot called Nest Egg? It’s also used sometimes in the HBO show ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ but it isn’t on the soundtrack!!!

Does anyone know the WB commercial song that was played a lot in September when they were advertising new shows and season premiers? This is when WB was turning into CW. Also, at the end Lorelei says, “It’s good to be home.”

October 22nd, 2006 at 5:33 pm
reply to #237, the VISA commercial.
The artist is Christopher Faizi.
that song was created especially for the commercial, but in Chris’ MySpace,
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea…iendid=12281907
He says:
9/06 :: i just wrote a new piece of music for visa business. the spot is called ‘paper forest’ and has some cool effects. it’s all about conservation and has all these papers flying back to the forest (where all the trees are made of paper). might be turning this into a full length song too. be on the lookout… it’s already airing!!

I am so sad that the Delta Victorian Faucet song cannot be found anywhere. Isn’t it sad that the website someone suggested up there about the company that produced the commercial doesn’t have a clip of the commercial? That’s the only commercial they don’t have a sample for!!! WHAT IS UP WITH THIS DELTA DILEMMA!
October 24th, 2006 at 3:41 am

I’m also looking for the Special K song with swing music. Any ideas what it may be?
Also, in response to the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole song on the 50 First Dates soundtrack, it’s not on there. That’s not the same version. I found the version from the movie at Walmart.com, but they don’t sell the track separately, you have to purchase the entire album. There are 2 artists listed, Kaulana Kaneka & Vince Esquire, the album is called Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School. This is the exact version from 50 First Dates (one of my fav movies!)
October 26th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
The song is from the Special K commercial where the ladies are having breakfast on an outside patio. I have heard it before on the Bernie Mac show and some other commercials. Someone HAS to know what the name/artist of this song is.

I’m going back a long while….to 1998/1999, possibly 2000…car commercial (of course). Don’t know which car (luxery??). The commercial started with chessboard on a train, then a chess piece which transformed into various cool, artistic scenes. The song had no words, but was melodic/techno sounding - very futuristic, smooth sounding. Any possibilities??
November 1st, 2006 at 11:42 pm
Way to go Jack (re: 301), I just played that commercial about 1.4 million times
November 2nd, 2006 at 1:13 am
Does anyone know the smooth song, with a great beat on the Jeep Compass commercial? Also, anyone on the track from the new Lebrons commercial where “business” dives into the pool?
November 2nd, 2006 at 5:58 pm
Hey Rusty, the song from the Jeep commercial is called “Steady Bounce” by KRS-ONE, if I’m not mistaken. That is a great beat, isn’t it? As for the new Lebrons commercial, can’t help you there. I’d like to know what it is too, actually. ^_^

title are unknown.
Have a great day!

November 4th, 2006 at 2:42 pm
heather (#319), I think you’re looking for a Bacardi spot. You can see it here: http://www.bacardi.com/ . The one I’m thinking of is the second spot on their video player, the Mojito commercial. They had several of these spots going, so I’m not sure which one you’re thinking of.
November 4th, 2006 at 4:48 pm
#320, Sujal, The mojito one is what I was looking for. Do you know if that’s just a random beat for the commercial, or if there is a real song behind it?
November 5th, 2006 at 2:34 pm
#316 - Bossross: The song your looking for is “Mad World” by Gary Jules, also from the Donnie Darko Soundtrack (wicked movie btw). Now does anyone know the song in the new West 49 Fox clothing commercial? I can’t quite place it but know I’ve heard it before…any help would be great

Okay, this is going to be a hard one. I was watching Lost last nite and at 49 minutes into the show during a commercial break, there was an extended and new commercial for that new show Daybreak with Taye Diggs, and the background song sounded almost country, but I think it is more acoustic. It is heavy on acoustic guitar and vocals. Some of the lyrics go something like:
“You can outrun the devil, if you try”
and
“I can hear what you’re thinking, all your doubts and fears”
and
“in time will surely come a day”
Every time I google these lines from the song, it comes back as The Punisher on IMBD and Quotepedia.com.
Okay, guess what, I have that album in my massive MP3 collection, and it is track 19 (Mark Collie - In Time). Um, er, thanks everyone for helping me out
Anyway, if you have the album, it is a good time and it MADE that commericial.
I am already hooked on CSI:LV, 24, Lost and Prison Break, otherwise I am sure I would get into the show.
Good nite all!

Sonic, post #299 - the video description lists the music as “Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor: l. Molto Allegro” Remix done by Grayson Matthews Audio Design.
Remix might be harder to find than the original piece… have you tried limewire or itunes for it?

RE: The “A Diamond Is Forever” commercial song, this song is most definitely a cover of Cat Stevens’ “How Can I Tell You,” and I’m not sure who’s singing it. It sounds a lot like Cat Power, but the voice is a little higher.

Thanks for replying but that’s not the same song. Maybe that was from the old dell commercial? This one is a rock n roll song with electric guitar & a harmonica I think.

November 23rd, 2006 at 6:13 pm
The Cat Power cover of “How Can I Tell You” hasn’t been released yet. But if you like her, you should check out her other stuff. Some You Tube clips of “Lived In Bars,” one of my favorites from her. Wait for the last part of the song… it builds up to a nice swing.
