It’s funny, but I find a lot of my new music from TV commercials. Unfortunately, it takes some investigating to figure out who wrote what music because the music isn’t always publicized. Some companies, like VW, have a place on their web site dedicated to this type of info. Others, like Mitsubishi don’t mention their commercials at all. Of course, VW has already released a compilation CD of some of their commercial music. So, they might be the exception rather than a norm.
I’ve found some good resources on matching music to commercials, though. Here they are:
- Clipland
- Commercial Breaks and Beats: UK Television Advert Music Database
As a result, I’ve found out that the cool VW commercial they’re showing on the Loews commercial reel has music by ELO called Mr. Blue Sky.
Now, who owns an ELO CD anymore?
There are some cool finds buried in there, and it’s a lot of fun to figure this stuff out.
On another note, I’ve noticed that I find “new” music from the companies focused on younger consumers. Like VW, or the Mitsubishi Montero commercial (which turned me on to telepopmusik). On the other hand, companies like Lexus (which used a Chemical Brothers track on one of their recent commercials) tend to focus on established artists, even if it’s electronica or some alternative style. I realize this is probably a function of their advertising agency and probably by design, anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.
Update: Feel free to ask questions in the comments below. Regular readers are happy to answer, as am I.

It’s Folger’s Black Silk commercial, anybody? How about the Audi A4 quattro commercial? they both sound techno. The quattro has a nice heavy beat sound. Thanks again, Luv O.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
To O: Regarding the Audi ad, I found the following, however,I can’t verify its accuracy::)
“The song that was used for the Audi commercial is called `Addiction` and is from a CD called `Turbulent Machines` by Michael Elsner but that record has never been released to the public, only to music supervisors. The full version of Addiction is about 3 minutes long and cut down to fit the commercial.” Hey O, check this site; guess he’s the one.

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone here knows the song used in the TV ads for the Cadillac DTS. The song is a TECHNO song and seems to be an instrumental. This commercial aired in the fall of 2005 so it’s an old one.
I’m also wondering if anyone here knows the name of the song used at the beginning of the CSI:Miami episode “Driven”. The song has a salsa sound to it.
Thanks in Advance.
March 6th, 2008 at 2:38 am
Does anyone know the name of the song for the most recent mitsubishi commercial? It’s like punk-electronic(I can’t really define it)and it’s sung in a foreign language, I think - maybe japanese(?). By the way, I live in southern California - in case it’s a local commercial.

March 8th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
I was wondering if anyone knew who sings the song, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?” on the new GE commercial, with the clouds. It’s a relatively new commercial so I’m not sure how many people have seen it. I know the original is by Creedence Clearwater Revival, and there are some by Bonnie Tyler, The Ramones, and Hi-Standard, and also by Teenage Fanclub. However, none of these are who sings the song! The person who sings the song is a woman.
March 8th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Actually, I found the artists! It’s by John Fogerty and Juju Stulback.
Now, I just need to locate an MP3. =) Thanks anyway!

To Logan Reply #1834:
Thank you sooo much! It’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’! I already had it, but had never listened to it. Now I can’t stop. I’d been looking for this for so long. While I was looking, after I got your answer and figured out which piece it was, I also found ‘Walkie Talkie Man’ that I’d lost! Now I’ve got some good stuff to listen to that I’d forgotten about.
Thank you again! Rachel

March 11th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Does anyone know the name of this song?
The lyrics I know are:
And I won’t take this sitting down,
Won’t be seeing you around
And I, and I,
Miss having you around
And I’m watching what I had go down the drain
It’s at the very end of the video of Ohio Is For Lovers by Hawthorne Heights on Youtube. It’s NOT Ohio Is For Lovers, though.
Please help, thanks.

Hi, I’m sure this has been asked somewhere on here before but I can’t find it. This song has been driving me up the wall. It is from sept - oct of 2007, a car commercial…the only parts of the lyrics i can remember is “i would climb the highest mountian, i would swim….” I think there was a girl singing that part. I think it was the car commercial where there was a car driving down the road but you couldn’t see any other cars till the man got out of his car. I hope someone out there can help me find this! If somebody knows it could you email me at jenn_warken10@hotmail.com? Thank you so much. You people seem like you’re good at finding songs!
March 12th, 2008 at 5:59 am
[773] the song in the hyundai commercial is joe purdy singing ‘get it right today’ from the album ‘you can tell georgia’, available on itunes.

March 12th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
1788 had written a comment about a song from a recent car commercial with parents watching their daughter grow into a young woman. Towards the end, she drives out of an assembly factory with her parents watching her. I don’t know the name of the car, but the song sounded folksy and slow with a man singing it. Part of the lyrics were “now she comes down the stairs…”. If anyone knows the name and artist of this song, please let me know. Thank you.
March 12th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Hey does anyone know this song, i think it is on the Dentyne Ice comercial, it goes a little like this: … i can’t stop this “stu.. stu.. stu..stu.. sturring”
March 13th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
To Paris: The Dentyne Ice ad features the song “Stuttering” by Ben’s Brother.
March 14th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
To those interested in the songs used in many of the Clorox ads: the album is now available on iTunes. Search by Blue Sky Project rather than Clorox. There is a band called Clorox which will give you other music choices other than those you are looking for. Purchase / download individual tracks or the album. Enjoy.

hey anybody know the song to a brand new lexus commercial, it has a tree
getting switched from a forest to a quarry, and then to a beach place, it has
no words and it has a cool like bass beat to it
March 16th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
To Alex: Regarding the Lexus ad, it appears that the song was composed / performed only for the ad. If I find any info to the contrary, I’ll post it.
March 16th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Logan! Thank you so much, I was too wondering what that song was!

March 18th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
To David: I believe you’re referring to the included Coors ad. If so, though they a number of good tunes in their ads, I believe they’re all composed/performed only for the ads.

Does anyone know what song is in the commercial about advanced medical systems? It features an asian woman walking through, what looks like Japan to me, and an Asian man is staring at her, knocks over everything in his way and breaks his foot…she ends up being his doctor…yadda yadda.
I think its a german girl singing the song…not sure. I really love the song and would love to know who sings it. Thanks!
March 19th, 2008 at 12:06 am
As was mentioned already, the Clorox songs from the “Mermaid” and “Pirates” commercials are now available on itunes, cdbaby, etc. on an album called THE BLUE SKY PROJECT. The songs are extended from their original versions and are included with songs from other Clorox commercials.
Sales of the album benefit a charity called Music In Schools Today (mustcreate.org), which supports music in public schools. We’re very proud of this launch, and hope to really make a difference in the lives of kids who love music.
We put this album together partly because of the support we’ve received from sites like this, youtube, and people who emailed asking for the songs. We hope you enjoy the extended versions. And thanks for your support.
Here’s the links if you’d like to check out the music:

For those of you that just hit this post and don’t read the rest of the site, there’s an interesting mini-backlash against the Nike Commercial featuring Saul Williams’s List of Demands. If you’re interested, check out the comments on my first post about the commercial (which has the video), and then my follow up post summarizing my thoughts on this.
And, go and buy Saul Williams latest album if you like the song. It’s pretty good stuff.

To Ottenbacher: Regarding the Nissan Murano commercial, one recent ad (past couple of months) features “Home” by Great Northern. This one?
April 23rd, 2008 at 5:15 pm
To u2miller20: I hope the Heineken ad you refer to is the one with “It’s Love” by Chris Knox.
April 23rd, 2008 at 5:36 pm
To poster # 1932: regarding the All State ad, the only one I’ve seen is about a year old and it featured the song “From Where You Are” by Jason Wade of Lifehouse. This one or something newer?

To Logan, regarding #1934, You’re right on my brother! How do you get all these answers? You should be on one of those millionaire shows;=) Thanks again & Luv,”O”.

Oh! here’s another one: Can you please tell me who did the background music for the Xerox Color commercial where a young female painter is splashing paint all around her apartment. then the paint drips down the apartment downstairs through the light fixtures while two men are discussing business with a piece of paper & the paint drips on their page & gives them color. In the background you hear a Rock - tech music & the words “kick it” & “get it started”.
April 25th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
To Ottenbacher: Glad to get that one for you my friend. I’ve seen the xerox ad a zillion times now; Hope I can come up with the tune.:)

Does anyone know the songs from either of 2 different AMC movie commercials. The first one is for Wild Bill with Jeff Bridges. Its a folk song and I cannot fully understand the lyrics but it sounds good. The lyrics sound like “a dealer, doesn’t care, when it kills” or something like that.
The next song was advertising a bunch of movies that were going to be shown in March. One of them was Terminator. The chorus sounds like “killer, he’s such a killer” They aren’t popular songs but they seemed pretty good. I cannot find out who sings it anywhere, though.

Ottenbacher, I’m trying to find that Xerox commercial song too, and it’s driving me nuts! I hope someone figures it out soon! But I thought the lyrics were “step aside” instead of “get it started,” but I could be wrong.

Anyone recognize the bluesy guitar riff on the Kingsford “slow down and grill” commercial?
Sounds familiar, but I’m unsure if it’s even a true song or just a familiar riff?
Help?

May 11th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
To Greg: Regarding the Direct TV ad, maybe Ooh La La by Goldfrapp? If not, do you have anything else; male female, alternative, etc?
May 11th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
I think it has a female robot and the lyrics are something like ” flip my switch, turn me on, oohla ,la ,la ” driving beat , female voice. I can’t get this out of my head!
May 11th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Almost whispering

May 12th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Another one I’m looking for - I’m pretty sure it’s Orbital, but on the GE Profile commercial (for the dishwasher you only put soap in once every two months), I can’t figure out which song tho!
May 12th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
I know this is gonna be hard to explain, but I’ll give it a try.
This song i’m thinking of was on a commercial (or a few) earlier this year but I cant even remember what commercial (i’m thinking an insurance company? or health care? or technology). I know it’s not just made for the commercial because I’ve been hearing it played in someone’s car, and outside in our school’s plaza, and even during class.
It’s kinda funny sounding, starts out with only a guitar/stringed instrument being plucked, then the bass and drums come in. KINDA sounds like maybe Moby or something..but it’s not. It has a moderate tempo and i think it’s genre is alternative? I don’t think there are words either.
If anything has any ideas what this might be, that would be AMAZING. its drving me crazy because I have no information to find it!
May 13th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Hey can someone please tell me where I can find the instrumential version of the song Move you from Grey’s Anatomy? Thanks
