It’s funny, but I find a lot of my new music from TV commercials. Unfortunately, it takes some investigating to figure out who wrote what music because the music isn’t always publicized. Some companies, like VW, have a place on their web site dedicated to this type of info. Others, like Mitsubishi don’t mention their commercials at all. Of course, VW has already released a compilation CD of some of their commercial music. So, they might be the exception rather than a norm.
I’ve found some good resources on matching music to commercials, though. Here they are:
- Clipland
- Commercial Breaks and Beats: UK Television Advert Music Database
As a result, I’ve found out that the cool VW commercial they’re showing on the Loews commercial reel has music by ELO called Mr. Blue Sky.
Now, who owns an ELO CD anymore?
There are some cool finds buried in there, and it’s a lot of fun to figure this stuff out.
On another note, I’ve noticed that I find “new” music from the companies focused on younger consumers. Like VW, or the Mitsubishi Montero commercial (which turned me on to telepopmusik). On the other hand, companies like Lexus (which used a Chemical Brothers track on one of their recent commercials) tend to focus on established artists, even if it’s electronica or some alternative style. I realize this is probably a function of their advertising agency and probably by design, anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.
Update: Feel free to ask questions in the comments below. Regular readers are happy to answer, as am I.

Does anyone know the name of the song played on the FOX 2008 new season promo. The commercial starts with the two “Nip Tuck” doctors underwater swimming toward the camera/TV screen and has a montage of other shows, but I think it ends with Dennis Leary (”Rescue Me”) imagining himself on fire and then plunging his face into a facebowl of icecubes. Any info is appreciated.

January 2nd, 2008 at 1:44 am
This is a tough one…
This song is famous and has been in several commercials, although I do not remember what they were for:
It’s a slow, relaxing, romantic song. The vocals are a man with a very soft voice, there is a violin playing softly in the background. Then once the man stops singing, the violin continues then there’s a piano playing very high and short notes in this pattern (try to imagine each number 1 as the high pitch piano key note and the spaces about a second pause in length, the 2 is a lower note, and the 121 notes are played consecutively without pause: 1 1 1 121 1 1 121 1 1 etc..
Sorry it’s hard to explain, any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Everyone:
I’ve been all over the internet and am dying to know the name of this particular Walgreen’s song. There is a couple in their car and they stop next to a Walgreen’s and the husband is gazing at his wife and there is music in the background, something to the effect of “I think I’ve fallen for you…” It came across the telly during the holidays. I would LOVE to know the name of this song, as it would be a perfect wedding song! I’m getting married this year, and I’m on the hunt. I greatly appreciate the help! Thanks!
January 13th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Jessica,
Is it “Falling in Love at a Coffee Shop” by Landon Pigg? I don’t recall the particular commercial you are talking about, but the lyrics seem similar: “I think that maybe I’m possibly falling for you”.

I did some searching and found this…
At this website:
http://adtunes.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19951&st=50
is a forum where people have been trying to find the song you are looking for. A guy named Jack, who is executive producer for Singing Serpent’s NYC studio posted in the forum and said that the song was created for the commercial… but a full song might be released.
You can view more info and confirm this at their website:

Hi again Logan, Can you please tell me who sings this song & it’s title? it sounds kinda westernish & it seems like 2 people are singing it together. Here it is: “I got a woman with plenty of money, she got the money I got the honey, call my baby late last night, she told me daddy everything is alright… She got the money, I got the honey (3x)… I don’t have to worry, she’s here till five, I roll my baby, she said don’t worry about a thing, she got the money & I got the honey (3x)… She’s all mine & I’m so glad (3x)…I’m so glad (3x).” Then there’s guitar playing & a man moaning some words. Please let me know, My golden God. Thanx again, O.

Here’s one more Logan: (female singer)”come to the attic, we’ll watch movies on the ceiling, there is no reason…la la la la la…take yourself out…fedd you tangerines, there’s no signal… make yourself sick…tra la lalda da da dub dub dub…come on come on…(guitar playing)…ta ta ta…come on come on”. This is all I could write down while listening this song. Thanks again, until next time my dear Logan.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Hi O: Most difficult one; “Again” by The Bird and The Bee / Lyrics may not be perfectly accurate.
la la la la, la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la
la la la la la, come on, come on, come on, come on
Make yourself free, make yourself grow
Come on up into the attic, come and see the glow up
A pretty idiot kissing everyone she doesn’t know
And the pigs are eating popcorn, selling tickets to the show
Give yourself away, feel the wind blow
Watching movies on the ceiling, all the R.E.S we know
If there’s someone you don’t like you don’t have to say hello
There’s no reason you should leave, there’s no reason you should go
la la la la, la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la
la la la la la, come on, come on, come on, come on
Take yourself out hit the tambourine
We have bloated up your eyes and feed you tangerines
If you open up your box you’ll find a time machine
If you’ll try to find a scratch, there’ll be no signs where you have been
Give yourself up, make yourself sing
Don’t tell us that you can’t believe is sampling
la la la la, la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la
la la la la la, come on, come on, come on, come on
la la la la, la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la
la la la la la, come on, come on, come on, come on
la la la la, la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la
la la la la la, come on, come on, come on, come on

For everyone looking for music from Clorox commercials (mermaid, pirates, and a few of the others, including the one that features Iron & Wine’s “Lion’s Mane), they will be releasing a short album (7 songs) in the next 6 weeks or so. The album will include extended versions of several of the songs that have appeared in Clorox commercials.
The album is called The Blue Sky Project and all the profits will go to a charity that benefits music in public schools. It will be available through itunes and other sites for download only.

It’s not exactly commercial, but it has been driving me crazy and I’m desperate. In the ESPN broadcast of the Australian Open final (it might have been in other matches too, but I don’t know for sure) there was a montage in the end, with a very soundtrackish sounding music. It’s currently on the ESPN360.com, the last 50 seconds or so of the replay of the Djokovic - Tsonga match. It sounds very similar (musical-structure wise) to the Pirates of the Caribbean and other Hans Zimmer work, but I’ve got no clue what it is.

Hey everyone. I’ve changed the site to only show the last 150 comments. I hope that the site is still useful in this layout and it doesn’t hurt the whole search engine thing, but scrolling to the bottom of 1700+ comments really sucked.
So, to make this more useable, I’ve made this change. If anyone objects, let me know.

I would really appreciate some help on finding these two songs:
A Rogers commercial with a father watching a hockey game, and his son can’t go to sleep, so he rewinds the game to show his son an “amazing goal”. The lyrics in the background (from what i remember) are “I will be the one who loves you the most”
A Kleenex commercial where there is a montage of people talking to a “walk-in” psychiatrist in the middle of the street. Some people cry, etc. The song that plays over the voices is acoustic and the lyrics are somewhat like: “Do you want to lay your head on my shoulder? I do’t mind…sometimes we all just need to let it out”
Any help is greatly appreciated
Cheers
PS. Sujal, i think the change is really great!Thank you!

Figured it out…..The ‘instrumental’ from the Sandals Resort commercial is actually part of John Mayer’s “The Heart Of Life”. I doubt it’s truly John Mayer after all the fiasco Sandals went through with the “Time of your Life” sound-a-likes lawsuit.

Oh, and does anyone know the music from the commercial of metal gear? I think it was metal gear… It had a weird-look’in guy in it and he was walking down a street, and then in to a building where he looked up into the darkness to see a huge creature? This was also back about a year ago,
Part of the lyrics went like this:
“All around me are familiar faces, worn out places…”
Thanks!

Skylinef22 (#1773, 1774):
I think you’re thinking of Gears of War, which used a cover of Mad World. The cover was done by Gary Jules and is available on iTunes, I think.
The House M.D. commercial probably uses a Robert Palmer song called Bad Case for Loving You.
Don’t know if it used a cover or the original, since I haven’t see it.

February 11th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Looking for the song in the commercial with a brunette singing on a bus with a guy playing guitar behind her. I know i’m not giving you much to work with here but it’s been on my mind for days.
February 11th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Never mind, I found it, it’s everyday people by sly and the family stone. It’s a smarties commercial.
February 12th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

There is a Mitsubishi commercial playing on tv where 3 different types of lancers come together into one or something like that, the song on the commercial is techno andit has these lyrics
Either: Bring all of what you got, she said keep it tight–or–Bring on what you got, she said keep it tight.
Also, it is definitly not “Bring it on” by Goose. That is a completely different commercial for Mitsubishi.
February 13th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Grant, that song is DEFINITELY ‘Bring It On’ by Goose. I was looking for it myself, and I know it for a fact. Go 20 seconds into this youtube video of Bring It On, you’ll know it’s right. Click it

February 13th, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Thank you, now that I watched your link I see what happened. I Had typed in “Bring it on” by Goose on youtube, but the video I clicked on was a completely different song yet still had the bring it on title, it was from goose but the video had odd looking derby cars in it. Much thanks Underlander.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
also there were no words in the song.
February 14th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Melanie Horsnell is a singer-songwriter from New South Wales, Australia. Her work can be found on Youtube, sure sounds like her to me.

As people said in the comments, it’s by Goose, but it’s called ‘Black Gloves’.

Can anyone please tell me the title of the song from a recent AMC (American Movie Classics) commercial. I believe the ad is for oscar movies AMC will be showing. The lyrics are something like this: In the night, oh in the night, in the night I will… it’s a woman’s voice I believe.
Any help you be hugely appreciated. Thanks.

I haven’t been here awhile - this forum has gone MAD! Had to spend some time playing “catch up” and I still don’t think I’ve seen it all!
Nice work, Sujal (and a most honorable mention to logan)! This place is ROCKIN!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
oh… in case anyone is wondering..
The new Coca Cola “video game” ad uses a cover of a song called “You Give A Little Love” - the original was part of the Bugsy Malone soundtrack (GREAT little movie, if you haven’t seen it!!). The CD is available through Amazon, so may be elsewhere too. The cover is done by Moses Patrou: http://www.mosespatrou.com/media.html (I started to write this to ask if anyone knew who did this cover, then found it myself - thought I’d share
)
To #1073 and everyone else who would like a search function here - Your broswer probably has one built-in - I know IE and Firefox do - Just go to your menu bar - click Edit, then “find in this page” or similar and type in a key word - your should then see all instances of that word on this page highlighted and you can click a next option to move from one to the next, etc…

welcome back u2miller20!
It’s all logan, btw. I don’t really share any of the credit except for, well, keeping the lights on.
February 18th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Oh, and as for a search function… keep an eye on CoolSpotters.com… That’s where I work now and I’m going to try to make a place for us to do this there, in a more searchable and organized fashion.

does anyone know the name of the song for the “Extra” commercial. There’s a guy checking his back at the air port and then the music starts…and it kinda sounds like this: “DON’T DON’T STOP, ROCK YOUR BODY,I KNOW YOU WANNA YEAAAAAAHHH!” Help, i’ve been trying to find this damn song for a long time now. And no it’s not by lucky boys confusion regardless of what many say.
February 20th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Hi Guys, does anybody know the background music from the Folgers Black Silk commercial? I think it was abit techno? Thanks again, Luv O.
February 21st, 2008 at 9:27 pm
To surge regarding the Extra gum ad. If it’s the one where the guy begins to strip, the music was produced only for the ad. That one? Are you referring to the ad which most people believe uses “Bossman” by Lucky Boys Confusion?
February 21st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Here’s the folks who provided the music for the Extra gum “strip” ad.

Yup. That’s it. How did you find it?!?!
February 24th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
hey thanks. it was actually the lyrics in your post that helped…I had been going insane looking for the song and hadn’t found it, and i got one bad lead before stumbling here. I took the lyrics from your post and pasted them in the google engine. At that point i was just clicking on anything that i thought might me remotely related and just so happened to click on one that said “The first single will be ‘In The Night’ i clicked the link, and got lucky really. I knew i had to come back here and share. I’m glad that i could help
February 24th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I’m looking for the cd of the music used for JC Penney commercials during the Oscar ceremonies
tonight (Feb24, 2008).
February 25th, 2008 at 1:54 am
To Paul1492. I just found that song. It’s called “In the night,” and it is sung by “Basia Bulat.” I can’t understand all the words, but the chorus seems to go like “Oh, in the night, oh, in the night, oh, in the night I will hide away my fortunate son.” Here’s the link to this pretty song:
http://www.basiabulat.com/video.htm MOG.com is also a great site for music-talk. Enjoy!! Anita
