It’s funny, but I find a lot of my new music from TV commercials. Unfortunately, it takes some investigating to figure out who wrote what music because the music isn’t always publicized. Some companies, like VW, have a place on their web site dedicated to this type of info. Others, like Mitsubishi don’t mention their commercials at all. Of course, VW has already released a compilation CD of some of their commercial music. So, they might be the exception rather than a norm.
I’ve found some good resources on matching music to commercials, though. Here they are:
- Clipland
- Commercial Breaks and Beats: UK Television Advert Music Database
As a result, I’ve found out that the cool VW commercial they’re showing on the Loews commercial reel has music by ELO called Mr. Blue Sky.
Now, who owns an ELO CD anymore?
There are some cool finds buried in there, and it’s a lot of fun to figure this stuff out.
On another note, I’ve noticed that I find “new” music from the companies focused on younger consumers. Like VW, or the Mitsubishi Montero commercial (which turned me on to telepopmusik). On the other hand, companies like Lexus (which used a Chemical Brothers track on one of their recent commercials) tend to focus on established artists, even if it’s electronica or some alternative style. I realize this is probably a function of their advertising agency and probably by design, anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.
Update: Feel free to ask questions in the comments below. Regular readers are happy to answer, as am I.

hii um i was wondering in the “Monster Fest” AMC music stuff, there’s a commercial for “Scream 3″ and the lyrics go something like “grasping for air, i scream….this is your last, your last night, this is your last” or something like that. I even tried the “song IDentifier” on my phone and it didn’t find a match. Please i’m like soooo desperate for this song it’s bugging me sooo much!!
November 9th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Hi Savvy Music Hunters, I’m looking for the artist & title of this song that I’ve been hearing on Muzak. He is male. I’ve tried with the best of my ability to copy down the words as I listen. Here are the words: “…boredom…probably down at the stables there I was gently polishing…only I don’t care …I don’t want to go to…doorway to the ballroom, calling some dude from my hotel room, I tired of writting eulogies in order that I I I I I I I toniiiiiiight toniiiiight…(guitar playing)…candles seem to keep us…cobweb rings…could it be I came to the wrong place…climb the stairs I saw Susie tonight outside that you noticed only through the wind…you can see them once the door is open they vanish…I saw Susie toniiiiight, toniiiight, toniiiiiight….”.

November 9th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
To Cyan: the song for Monsterfest is “Last Nightmare” by Parker Theory.

Hi there Ottenbacher. Welcome back.
Sanssouci by Rufus Wainwright
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
The boys that made me lose the blues tonight, and then my eyesight
All together, playing games of cards
Gambling the tiny shards of brass, once my heart
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
I’m lookin’ through the window from the garden
Waitin’ for the call to my hotel room
I’m tired of writing elegies to boredom
I just want to be at Sanssouci tonight
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
Surely not the one that loves me truly, only
He’s probably down at the stables, there
Gently polishing my cabriolet, only
I don’t care, I really want to go
So I’m opening the door wide to the ballroom
Callin’ up some dude from my hotel room
I’m tired of writing elegies in general
I just want to be at Sanssouci tonight
Tonight, tonight…
The candles seem to all have been blown out
Cupid’s wings have cobweb rings and no one’s about
Could it be I came to the wrong place?
But I swear I saw them climb the stairs, that sweet mystery
Who will be at Sanssouci tonight?
It’s only when you’re outside that you notice
Only from the window you can see them
Once the door is open, all will vanish
Ain’t nobody at Sanssouci tonight
Tonight, tonight

Thanks again & again Logan* It’s funny how Muzak has a monopoly on good music where ever you go. But then again, they do play very old & tired songs from time to time. Thanks again my Golden God.
November 11th, 2007 at 3:15 pm
You’re welcome Ottenbacher. Sometimes I feel like I and Muzak have a lot in common.:) Enjoy your song.

Who is the low voice singer on the new Volvo XC70 commercial? It’s so haunting.
Thanks
November 12th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
To Rebecca: the only Volvo ad I’ve seen lately has the song “I’m In a Lonely Way” by Stephin Merritt. Low voice; wouldn’t categorize it as haunting. Do you have any other info?
November 12th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

November 12th, 2007 at 10:48 pm
Does anyone know the song from the newest Debeers commercial? It’s not the one with Cat Power singing and the couple in bed. This has a man and a woman in car, stopped at a red light and the only line I caught was “I believe I’ve fallen for you.” Something along those lines. Thanks!
November 13th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
I really would like some help with the Dell computer commercial. That song is really awesome. If anyone could help find out who sings it, I would really appreciate. Thanks everyone!
November 13th, 2007 at 3:14 pm
To Rhiannon: the only new song I’ve seen for Debeers (and JC Penny) is “All That I Want” by The Weepies. The other song you are talking about is still a mystery. Hope I see it soon.

November 13th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
I’m looking for the new Diamond is Forever Commercial too, tonight it followed the end of “Bones” on Fox. The Lyrics are:

Yes there’s a chance that I’ve fallen quite hard over you,
I’ve seen the paths that your eyes wandered down I wanna come too…
November 13th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
I also should have added that the song is song by a male, it sounds acoustic, and his voice is soft and sexy!
November 13th, 2007 at 10:28 pm
1549, I just came on here to look for that song. Its very pretty and frustrating not top be able to find it.

November 16th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
To Day: Regarding the Rice Krispies ad song. Here’s a quote from their parent company, Kelloggs: “
The background music in this particular commercial was an original composition created for this spot.”
November 16th, 2007 at 11:38 pm
i’m assuming that they’re of no intention to release it either? correct?
Thanks anyways logan!
November 17th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
To Day: I have no information regarding their intentions. Wish we could have gotten the song for you.:)

November 18th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
To Day: Re the Telus ad song. There’s several out now. Are you referring to Ben Lee’s “We’re All In This Together”? It has the fishes, however, I believe one or two others have the little critters as well.:)
November 19th, 2007 at 12:38 am

Does anyone know the song from the AMC Promo for their Hitchcock Marathon on Thanksgiving?
It’s something like:
“You can blame it on the whiskey, you can say I’m going to hell. You can blame it on the money, but it was that made me kill.”
Old time, kind of Johnny Cash-ish.

Hi again, This is “O” speaking. Can you please tell me who sings this R&B sounding song on the Buick Lucerne CX. It’s a lady singing something like “you got my soul”. To Logan, They call me “R” at work;=) Thanks & Happy Turkey Day!
November 20th, 2007 at 6:03 pm
To “O”. It looks like the vocals in the Buick ads are sung by Kathleen Johnson. Hope you have a nice and safe Thanksgiving Day also. If you live in a part of the world which doesn’t celebrate Thanksgiving, have a nice long weekend anyway!:)
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:49 pm

November 23rd, 2007 at 4:54 am
To Logan, Thank you for your answer regarding Kathleen Johnson, but I couldn’t find her. Any info on the song title? Where can I download this song? Thanks again, “O”.
November 23rd, 2007 at 1:16 pm
To Ottenbacher: I don’t believe the song was of sufficient length to warrant a title. Not sure, however, I believe this may be the same person.

Hi. I saw a new JC Penney commercial for Christmas. It features “Real Love”, sung originally by The Beatles. However, I know that version and it just doesn’t sound like them in this commercial. Anybody know who is singing it? I really like this version as well. Would love to find out. Thanks!
November 23rd, 2007 at 8:04 pm
To gabbiee: According to multiple sources, The ad featuring “Real Love” featured the master recording performed by John Lennon. The reports further state that the “master” recording was sold to Penny’s by Yoko Ono; causing quite the stink among Lennon fans, etc. Here’ a report from a single source:
Fox News: Yoko Ono Did Sell Out John Lennon to JCPenney:
Yoko Ono did sell John Lennon’s rare home recording of “Real Love” to JCPenney for a commercial.
The spot began airing on Sunday night during ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters” before JCPenney could even make the announcement.
The Beatles have had their songs licensed for commercials in the past, but with the rare exception of perhaps “Revolution” years ago, they never have allowed master recordings out. The songs are always re-recorded.
“Ad agency Saatchi and Saatchi handled the deal, I’m told, with Ono directly. The much-disliked widow of Lennon has sold a number of items under her late husband’s name over the years, including glasses, art and an action figure. But using a rare, acoustic home recording — and a beautiful, haunting one at that — as the Christmas song for a department store seems particularly greedy.”
November 23rd, 2007 at 11:14 pm
Spork, the AMC commercial song is called “What Made Me Kill” by Portland, OR band Drunken Prayer. You can find them on Myspace or ITunes
November 26th, 2007 at 10:16 pm
The name in the AMC Commercial is Telescope, but Silver Circles
November 26th, 2007 at 10:24 pm
Sorry, the AMC Commercial song is Silver Circles by Telescope, not the other way around. This is the one with the various movie clips and the guy singing.
November 27th, 2007 at 7:02 am
To Logan, regarding #1584, the song from Kathleen Johnson was not long enough to warrant a title, so does that mean it was only made for that commercial? Then what’s the background music of the 2008 Cadillac CTS commercial? It sounds alittle like early 90’s Smashing Pumpkins. Thanks again “O”.
November 27th, 2007 at 7:45 am
does anyone know the name of the piano piece played in the new lexus commercials were it shows people getting weird presents… and it says “if you don’t get what you want this season…. buy yourself a lil something… a lexus” its a great piano piece
November 27th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Hey - here’s an oldie - an extreme oldie.
My mystery track is circa 2001, 2002, when the auto companies were trying to urge everyone to buy a car at 0% APR… this was right after 9-11 when there was a buying slump for the auto industry.
There was a 0% APR car commercial showing 3 or 4 youngish, funky dressed women driving around in what I think was a multilevel parking garage, a night scene. Unremarkable looking silver colored car (I could be wrong about the color). The car stops and some of the women look out / get out.
Throughout the commercial there is this incredible thumping beat, some dance track.
Any ideas?
November 27th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
To Ottenbacher: Regarding the Buick ad, the song was made only for the ad. The CTS ad (with Kate Marsh) is “Stars” by Hum. That ad?
November 27th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Logan, regarding the chrysler commercial that everyone is trying to find. It’s the ‘rooms’ commercial for the Dodge Grand Caravan. No vocals, just some harpsichord-sounding music with some guitar. Very quiet & soothing.
Jim.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Hi Jim: I have no idea as to the “second” Grand Caravan tune. Sounds great; hope it’s real so it shows up eventually.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

November 27th, 2007 at 10:50 pm
Logan, thanks for the “CTS song”.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
To Mike: You’re very welcome and I hope you enjoy the song.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
To ’so blue: Regarding the Rice Krispies ad, I provide you with the following statement from the tv ad creator: “I’m the writer who wrote the commercial and I can confirm that the music was written specifically for the spot. It’s lovely, huh? Sadly, there isn’t a full version of the song. But, it HAS happened before that consumer demand for a full song has prompted the advertiser to commission a full version of a song from the performer. This happened with a Cheer commercial I wrote. The performer in the Cheer commercial was Lisa Dalbello, and you can read about that event in her Wikipedia entry: “She performed the song “Always” for the Cheer detergent commercial “Coming Home” that aired in 2003, which was so popular and garnered so many inquires, that Cheer commissioned her to do a full length version which they made available for download from their website.”
So! If you contact Kellogg’s, you never know what you may get.
November 28th, 2007 at 8:45 pm
To ’so blue: Here’s some more info regarding the RK ad: “that’s me singing a song my friend Ed Dunne wrote.
you can hear my original compositions at:
myspace.com/rosey
or
roseymusic.com
wish i could see the commercial, but they arent running it donw here in LA. so alas, i’ve never seen it…. ;(

I don’t know if we can only do commercials about products, but I thought I’d post just in case. I just saw a new promo/trailer for the new Tudors season coming this spring (on Showtime). Has anyone seen it and does anyone know what song it was playing? It was a great promo and the song was awesome! Thanks!
December 4th, 2007 at 10:44 pm
Sheesh. I was gonna post some of the lyrics I heard. (also, it’s a man singing)
I hear the wind beging to moan.
Soon the moon will start to roam.
And as the sun begins to fade
Turn off that light and draw the shade.
I choose my steps (something something something)
This wrecking ball will be (something)
I never knew that for so long
(…chorus…)
Living in this house of cards
(repeated 5 x’s)

To Holly: Regarding the Clorox ad song. Two things. First, Having never used zSHARE before, I hope this works so you can listen to the uploaded song and determine if it’s the one you refer to. Secondly, If you do identify the song, perhaps you might know/share who the artist is.:)

Logan! You rock my world. Thanks so much. All I really know about the music is that a guy named H. Scott Salinas wrote the compositions under Amber Music. According to a blog someone wrote the songs were written specifically for the commercials and don’t have titles. Thanks so much!

I have been searching for the music to the Home Depot commercial that advertises NFL team colors that aired this fall. The song is an instrumental and I would like to please ask if anyone knew who created that song and the song title? Thanks for any help!

Hi Holly. Well, I guess that worked ok. Enjoy your song.:)

Hey! I’ve been looking for the song in the new Dell XPS commericial.
I caught the end lyrics, they went like:
“I asked my mother if I was beautiful, and this is what she said”
Any help?
Thanks!
December 6th, 2007 at 6:54 pm
Nevermind, it was answered in an above comment. xD
December 7th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
To Logan, regarding “My Patch”, Oh Yeah! Absolutely! You’re my man too;=)
p.s. What’s the background music for the Dolce & Gabana Jewels (D&G) where two girls are kissing when they meet. There are 2 versions of this commercial but same music, the other being two guys kissing. What this has to do with selling designer jewelry? Who knows but the music is what caught my attention. Oh Yeah!
December 7th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
To O: the D&G ad features Dancefloor by Stylophonic from a year ago and the current ad features “Stylophonic’r U Experienced” by Stylophonic which is a remix of the first song. Go here for a listen::) http://www.myspace.com/stylophonic

What’s the song in the new Zune commercial? Its a man singing…
December 14th, 2007 at 2:54 am
Does anyone know the song in a really old Lowe’s commercial before that spring anthem thing? It has a lot of bells and a lot of chimes and in the commercial at one point there’s a giant carpet being unrolled on something that looks like stairs. I think stairs… This was around 2001 or 2002 btw.
There’s also another commercial that ends with an upward pan to a starry sky with colorful fireworks but I don’t know what commercial it is anymore… I think Skittles or some car insurance =P
December 14th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
To Lauren: Two recent Zune ads feature Lake Michigan by Rogue Wave and Sleeping Lessons by The Shins. One of these?

December 18th, 2007 at 12:07 am
To Logan: Nope. Correct me if I’m wrong but the “See You At The Lights” is the most recent one…right? The one I’m talking about had some gals putting shoes on a clothesline and what not and the song had a female singer. It advertised their “Fall Finale Sale” mainly during Oct.- Nov. It’s on youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=gu6hmZ5RqIg

To Rai: There are two versions of the LG plasma ad with the couch scene. One ad features the song “Strict Machine” by Goldfrapp and the other version is unknown.
December 18th, 2007 at 6:38 pm
Hey logan, Strict Machine is a pretty good song, thanks for that. Unfortunately I think it’s the other song I’m looking for.
I’ll keep my eye on this site in case the name of the song/singer is ever discovered.
It’s a mystery. I can’t even find that commercial on youtube.

Okay. I’ve been looking for this all night. I saw this commercial (I think it was for a tv or computer). This woman is singing and playing the piano (i think), and a man comes out and changes the song on his computer or something and then these rap artists start. One of the rapper’s is wearing a wolf shirt. I really would love to know the artists and thier songs!
