It’s funny, but I find a lot of my new music from TV commercials. Unfortunately, it takes some investigating to figure out who wrote what music because the music isn’t always publicized. Some companies, like VW, have a place on their web site dedicated to this type of info. Others, like Mitsubishi don’t mention their commercials at all. Of course, VW has already released a compilation CD of some of their commercial music. So, they might be the exception rather than a norm.
I’ve found some good resources on matching music to commercials, though. Here they are:
- Clipland
- Commercial Breaks and Beats: UK Television Advert Music Database
As a result, I’ve found out that the cool VW commercial they’re showing on the Loews commercial reel has music by ELO called Mr. Blue Sky.
Now, who owns an ELO CD anymore?
There are some cool finds buried in there, and it’s a lot of fun to figure this stuff out.
On another note, I’ve noticed that I find “new” music from the companies focused on younger consumers. Like VW, or the Mitsubishi Montero commercial (which turned me on to telepopmusik). On the other hand, companies like Lexus (which used a Chemical Brothers track on one of their recent commercials) tend to focus on established artists, even if it’s electronica or some alternative style. I realize this is probably a function of their advertising agency and probably by design, anyway, but I just thought it was interesting.
Update: Feel free to ask questions in the comments below. Regular readers are happy to answer, as am I.

To mzyellowqueen: The song title is “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. Here’s a quote from his myspace site:
“So there have been a lot of questions about where one can get a copy of the track. To clarify: On October 2nd “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” will be the bonus track when you download a copy of Back Flipping Forward off of iTunes.”

Oh Darn:=(
What about the background music for the Wrigley’s Extra Gum where the guy at the airport security check point is stripping his clothes off & boogying while chewing Wrigleys gum with the words “Rock your body…don’t don’t stop…rock your body”. It’s sort of an electronic dance song. Please help. Thanks again.
September 20th, 2007 at 8:51 pm
To Ottenbacher: It looks like the Wrigley’s airport ad song was produced and recorded for the ad only. If I find anything different than this,I’ll let you know.
September 20th, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Logan and Ottenbacher, I looked a while for that ad (the Wrigley one) and everything I found says it’s a custom piece written for the commercial. I’ll try to track down the links…

Hi there..I have been reading and searching for this song..(or jingle?) For the Sun Life commercial…
I only have a few lyrics “..it’s not very ordinay…a miracle today”?
it is very catchy is a haunting sad kind of way.
The girls voice sounds familiar…
any idea ?
Thank you for your help!
September 22nd, 2007 at 3:42 pm
To Jingle lover: perhaps the Sun Life ad uses the Sarah McLachlan song “Ordinary Miracles”. Hope so.:)
It’s not that unusual
When everything is beautiful.
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
The sky knows when its time to snow,
Don’t need to teach a seed to grow.
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
Life is like a gift they say
Wrapped up for you everyday;
Open up and find a way
To give some of your own.
Isn’t it remarkable?
Like every time a rain drop falls,
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
Birds in winter have their fling
But always make it home by spring.
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
[Ordinary Miracle lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com
When you wake up everyday
Please don’t throw your dreams away;
Hold them close to your heart
Cause we’re all a part
Of the ordinary miracle.
Ordinary miracle
Do you want to see a miracle?
ohh ohh ohh, ohhh ohh ohh…
It seems so exceptional
That things just work out after all.
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
Sun comes up and shines so bright
And disappears again at night.
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
ohh ohh ohh, ohh ohhh ohh…
It’s just another ordinary miracle today.
September 22nd, 2007 at 3:46 pm
That should be “Ordinary Miracle”. Singular, not plural. Where’s that edit function???:)

It had a REALLY nice song, that I think the main chorus was “On Top Of The World”, the guy singing sounded like Tom Jones but I dont think its him. Anyone have any idead?
Thanks!

I love the piano jingle that goes along with the AGEdwards tv ad about your nest egg. I would love to know where to purchase it in print so I could play it. Also, for years I have been looking for a beautiful piece of music from the movie “The Age of Innocence”, called Ascending the staircase( at least that is what it is labeled on the CD ). Elmer Bernstein wrote it but I have never been able to locate any of his beautiful music from that movie in sheet music form. Hope you can help me. Thanks. L. Bain

October 3rd, 2007 at 1:40 am
Hi, guys! Looking for a song that is featured in a current commercial, not sure what it was about, nor do I know any part of the lyrics, however, I kow for a fact that its Regina Spektor. There was also a commercial w/ a girl playing a guitar, it was quite long and I think it was only played on MTV, part of the lyrics is either “American Lady or Baby”. Maybe Logan knows, our “Golden God” =)
Someone asked quite a while ago about a song w/ “my style is di bom diggy bom…” lyrics, that’s “Cobrastyle” by the Teddybears.
October 3rd, 2007 at 1:43 am
Michelle the song is “How Can I Tell You” by Cat Power, but I dont think that there is a full version of it…if you find it, do let me know…I’ve loved it since X-mas of ‘06 =)

October 3rd, 2007 at 11:48 am
To texazsue:It’s my understanding that Stephin Merritt performs the song “I’m In a Lonely Way” for the Volvo XC70 Crossover ad. He’s the same person who also sings the Volvo song “The Wheels On the Car”. I also read that it may be released soon on iTunes.
October 3rd, 2007 at 3:17 pm

October 3rd, 2007 at 11:32 pm
Does anyone know the name of the song playing at the end of the nascar commercial airing on espn previewing the upcoming races? It is a hard rock song I think with lyrics like fire and engines or something.
October 4th, 2007 at 12:06 am
To Ty: so many nascar songs; so little attention span (for me). Could it be Metallica - Fuel For Fire? I know a few nascar ads which don’t have those particular lyrics. Let me know if this isn’t it and I’ll try to catch it. I have noticed now that on espn and speed channel that during the promos a lot of times they flash the song title / artist name in the lower left corner of the screen.
October 4th, 2007 at 12:24 am
Thanx Logan but I’m affraid that isn’t it. Believe me, I wish it were that easy. I call myself paying attention to the screen but didn’t catch a title. I have googled, asked and espned all the dot comming I can think of. I hope someone can fill me in on this one. Thanks for the help.
October 4th, 2007 at 1:16 am
To Ty: We’ll find it.:)
October 4th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Hi again you guys! I’m going back to that commercial that I have been searching for several months now. It’s the Cinnamon Toast Crunch commercial where a girl’s nose falls off & she goes off running after it. She then ends up at a boys kitchen while he’s having his Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. She then sits down at the table & says “may I join you?”. The boy then says “sure! the same thing happened to me last week”. And in the background there’s this rock guitar playing with a neat rock tune. Can anybody help me? Rock On!
October 4th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
To Ottenbacher: The only info I find regarding your question says in part “it’s a custom created piece that is based on Nirvana’s 1989 song “Stay Away”. Does that sound reasonable to you or is this inaccurate?
October 4th, 2007 at 7:47 pm

AMC network is using this song for a commercial and I can’t figure out what it is. Google was no help and it’s driving me crazy!! A guy is singing and it’s a rock/alternative style song ~
I want to go where the skies are so clear/ Currents are shifting and worries are drifting away/ If I had a choice in the matter I think I would stay….
Any luck on that song yet?

That was a pretty good call Logan but not the song I was looking for. I watched espn most of the night tonight and saw preview commercials for nascar and they didn’t use that song. It may have been used just for that particular commercial which was aired last week if not the week before. I think I may be out of luck on this one.
October 4th, 2007 at 11:18 pm
To Ty: No, not out of luck yet. We’ll just keep searching and waiting. They use so many songs now that it’s difficult to keep up with it all. Do you remember if it was NEXTEL or the Busch series?

In the 70’s, I believe it was a girl doing the holoa holoa on top of the Chevron gas pump and she says, “heli mi, ekie, i-no, oh chevron, which means, welcome to chevron island”. Any background would be appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone know who does “Ordinary Miracle” in the CVS television commercial. It’s actually good not to hear Sarah McLachlan singing it.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me the name of the song (and group) that is used in the Mitsubishi Outlander commercial. It is an instrumental with heavy bass guitar and drums. Sounds a lot like the Rolling Stones.
(I am sorry. I think posted this question in the wrong place before.)

Hi. I’m looking for a song on a GE Ecomagination commercial. Here is a link to their site, where you can see the commercial.
http://ge.ecomagination.com/site/#ads
Under the TV Ads section, click on “More TV ads”.
Click on “Play Video” under “Jar”.
If anyone knows, thanks a bunch!

To gabbiee: Having not looked at your link (lazy), I recall the GE ad last year featured “Catch the Wind” by Donovan. Is that the one or will I be going to the link?

hello everyone, I had posted a question a couple of weeks ago in reference to a commercial played on mtv that shows several people moving around in bed restlessly and then the commercial cuts into another scene where the people are jumping up spreading their arms and legs on a street. Can anyone please help me figure out the song that is played on this commercial. thank you once again.

To dorian: I don’t recognize the tune in the volvo ad. Hopefully, I’ll run across it soon and I’ll post it to you. Sorry.
